Filipe - Marine Biologist

Filipe - Marine Biologist
From: Faial, Azores
How come you're working on 'Defending our Oceans'?
I'm supporting the Greenpeace initiative by providing scientific assistance to the campaign; I think that protecting the oceans from irresponsible human activities, such as bottom trawling, is of utmost importance.
What are you looking forward to most in this campaign?
Gathering new images from the deep sea ecosystems of the Azores, to illustrate what diverse sea-life will be destroyed if we allow trawling or whaling to happen here. I want to help support Greenpeace's appeal to the United Nations for a moratorium on high-seas bottom trawling around the world.
What personal connection do you have to the ocean (if any?)
I was born in the Azores, where the ocean is central to our lives. Moreover, I am a marine biologist and love my profession. The ocean the place I feel most at home.
How/why did you get involved with Greenpeace?
Greenpeace contacted the University of the Azores Department of Oceanography and Fisheries, where I work, and I was happy to help.
What made you follow your chosen profession?
The close relation I have with the sea made it an obvious choice for me to understand more about the life that inhabits it.
