The hydrophone - our 'ear' in the water
by Richard, onboard the Esperanza
One of the pleasing things about today was hearing a group of dolphins recorded by the hydrophone we are currently towing behind the ship. Russell Leaper, a whale scientist from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has been on board sorting out the hydrophone, a high-powered underwater microphone that can be configured to pick up sounds across a wide range of frequencies far above and below the range of human hearing. What we are particularly interested in detecting are the clicks made by sperm whales. Sperm whales echolocate through a complex broadband clicking system and exchange what are thought to be socially significant messages through special patterns of clicks, or codas. The special Rainbow Click software developed by IFAW allows us to locate animals that we might not necessarily see as we traverse the oceans, sometimes tens of kilometers from the ship.
For all their immense size, sperm whales are difficult to study and estimates as to how many there are in the worlds oceans vary considerably. Estimating whale populations is notoriously tricky, as not all whales on a transect will be detected by observers and they are not distributed evenly throughout the oceans. What we hope is that with Russells assistance we can set up a system for logging sperm whales and produce useful data with regards to their distribution while the ship makes its long ocean transits, so adding to our knowledge of this incredible animal.

That's cool! Would it be possible for you to load some of the sounds onto the internet so we can hear them?

hearing dolphins should have been a great experience ,as heidi said i would love to hear those sound recordings too.Since i was a child i have always admired dolphins they are so cute and its sad tht these beautiful creatures are hunted and get killed by the fishing nets , its high time that we as civilized citizens of this beautiful planet save these wonderful creation of god, they have the right to servive and florish just like other gods creation (we humans are included).
