Webcam on the move

by Dave, onboard the Esperanza

The Esperanza's webcam has been a bit up and down recently - this is partly because we've been messing around with it! Webcam-addicts will note that it's now facing a different direction - it was facing forward (so you could see where the Esperanza was going) but now it's facing aft (so you can see where we've been. Thom (radio operator ) and I were up in the Crow's Nest this morning, doing some work on the new-view towards the stern. Well, Thom was doing all the work, I was just hanging out, enjoying the height, and taking some pictures with my wide-angle lens.

In the webcam view, that massive dome-like structure houses our satellite dish. So, for the webcam image to reach you, it's got to whizz through there first, and up to a satellite in space, then bouncing back down and around the Internet. Crazy stuff.

The two black pipes on either side are the smoke-stacks from the engines, and the two orange things just inside them are the two big inflatable boats. The two white things pointing in towards the dome are the cranes. The heli-deck is just visible in the background, and the yellow vertical thing in the foreground is an antenna (the mast is festooned with the things).

Through the course of this trip, and throughout the year, we'll be experimenting further with the webcam. So all ideas and suggestions (within reason!) - are welcome. Post them below!

- Dave

Sailorspeak: Aft means towards the stern, or back of a ship (or aircraft!)

In the meantime, here's some photographs of this morning's high-altitude expedition.

Wow! Personally I really think this view is more interesting. Also you at least get to see something at night :)

What sort of camera is it? Can you plug it directly into the ship's network?

It would be cool to drop in on the galley sometimes and see what's cookin.

I think people should be able to see just how many hours a Greenpeace cook spends working in there!
