Sam - Videomaker

© Greenpeace/Gleizes
Rome, Italy (but is British)
This is my first trip with Greenpeace although I have had other onboard experiences - when I was an embedded cameraman with the US military on an aircraft carrier in 2003. From a war ship to a peace ship - quite a difference really.
I left my job as news cameraman two years ago and started working as videomaker for Environmental Justice Foundation, a small British based charity dedicated to environmental and human rights issues. One of their projects is on pirate fishing and that's how the collaboration with Greenpeace started.
I am from Britain but have been living in Rome for the last 16 years and started working in news about 12 years ago - first of all as camera assistant and producer and then editor and producer/cameraman. My main concern on this trip, so far, is how to keep the camera dry in the inflatables...

So u just need to take the proper "zip" bag. Ah! ANd u also need some good balance. For that, your experience in London buses is of great help!!
Besides, Remember, ALWAYS, one hand for u and one for the ship! SAFETY FIRST!

Thanks for the advice. Does that mean I need to put my brain in a 'zip' bag and get off at Picadilly Circus?

Better there than Tower Bridge, the place i love the most from London.
Take 6, 12 or walk around Haymarket St, with or without your brain on; up 2 u! Or go towards Marble Arch, hope off, cross through the underground tunnel {not the top (safety first!)}, take a box with you and... SPEAK UP! People around would love to hearing from u stories on... balance?

Did some filming on a ship off of Woods Hole last summer - I made a short safety line for the camera (over the side shots) with a climbing rope (3 feet) & two carabiners - one on each end. I shoot with a Sony DSR PD170. I spread my legs out for balance on the ocean swells - it was a fun challenge though. Good luck and stay dry! Sounds like the work you do is fun.
