Marta - Deckhand

Madrid (Spanish)
If you really think about it, we are all part of the same team. And I love being on board the ship, working on deck, getting my hands dirty with paint. Or even better if it's grease. Volunteers needed for the Greatest Greasing Plan of All! For the our work off the ship, we need the boats ready, but for this to take place we need the ship to be ready. Ready to be ready? If so, welcome on board the ship.

Different positions to suit almost all the needs on board (still trying to make a massage therapist part of the crew!). From the top to the bottom, Bridge, Deck, Galley and Engineers, the last but not the least. Did I tell you that they love rags? So during your nightwatches in port, it is always good to get the engineers some rags. And... let me think, what's a deckhand without a rag? Nothing! A good deckhand should always walk around rag in their hand, a work knife in their pocket, a piece of rope, and lots of energy. Don't forget your little torch (And don't leave your Leatherman in your cabin; which I sometimes do, hanging outside the door. When you need it, you have to ask somebody else - no good!

Keep the ship moving... when I first realised I was surrounded by the ocean I felt great - it was a coincidence or the way it was meant to be. I started on the ships after I went to hand in a translation to the Greenpeace office in Madrid... and heard of the possibility of helping out. I started helping on 'open boat days', then decided I wanted to volunteer as a deckhand...
