The Esperanza Webcam - What are you looking for?
by Dave, onboard the Esperanza
Over the last few days, I've had friends, family, land-based colleagues and random Internet people telling me how they've been glued to the Esperanza's webcam, especially when we've been visiting the remote islands St. Helena and Ascension. The rest of the time, when we're steaming along, there's nothing but the wide-open ocean to see. Still, people are leaving the webcam page running in the background, checking it every so often - just to get an eyeful of the big blue. I've been given heard various reasons...
"I can escape from the wind and rain that we've got here"
to
"You don't have any snow"
to
"Was that a whale?"
to
"Anything to avoid working"
to
"I'm waiting to see you doing naked dance on the bow, Dave"
to
"My god, the sea is big"
A few individuals (you know who you are) did convince me to wander out on deck to wave to them. Fortunately for everyone, I kept my clothes on.
So, what's your excuse? Why are spending hours you gazing at the Esperanza's webcam? Go on, spill the beans, and tell us!
(btw, the random picture included is of what I think is a masked booby, a member of the gannet family.)

If I gaze into the picture long enough it makes me feel like I am actually there and just for a moment I am no longer on my sofa with a stinking cold but on the bridge of the Esperanza, with you.

It's kinda like the web version of reality TV except better (because it *is* real) Do they find the villans in this episode.....what about today?....or today?....the suspense is great - and of course it's for a very real cause - I'm addicted - best of luck you guys.

Hi Dave
I just love what you guys are trying to do so I keep watching to see if I can see whales or dolphins or .... the odd(?) human.
I wish I could do more.
Sincere best wishes

Because I'm avoiding unpacking the seemingly infinite number of boxes I shipped here when I moved!
Well, that's just part of it. I'm watching the webcam because it's a glimpse into a world I've always known about, but the webcam makes it more "real". It's beautiful and fascinating. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there who needs to know there's more than just these crowded city streets.
And what's this about a dance, Dave? My, my... you must have quite a fan club ;-)

When i look at the webcam long enough, i go into a daze, watching the ship rock from side to side... i feel that i am there too... very pleasant experience indeed!
Im also looking to see any sign of life!

Hi all...,
...and why pirates of course. I've got my binoculars out now staring at your web cam transmissions on my pc screen. I'll let you know... ...But I just thought I'd share a couple of articles by The Independent UK this morning, ...and one mentioning Greenpeace's efforts specifically. Thanks to GP and your efforts there now, the world may be waking up after all:
1. Death of the World's Rivers - http://news.independent.co.uk/environment/article350785.ece
2. As the seas are plundered to extinction - http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/food_and_drink/features/article350889.ece
Just to let you know too, the eyes of the world are upon you. I've logged thousands of hits on your RSS feeds in just the last few days. ...and oh yeah, ...what a great idea this webcam. Now back to my binoculars... God speed...

Having had the opportunity to spend the afternoon aboard the Esperanza whilst she was in Cape Town, it just seems pretty darn cool to think that I was on the bridge where that web cam is (and on the bow, where it is focused)and now she sails into the deep blue yonder!
Watching the web cam (which I check around 10/15 times a day!)gives me , however brief, a little moment of escapist pleasure during the day.
If the office is going crazy, which it usually is...I take a moment to gaze and think how great it must be to be out there.
Peace and Fair Winds to all

Thanks everyone - Grateful, there's more here on the supermarket fish issue...
All threats of dancing are mere rumour.

Looks like the gecko really is a ham...he's been hanging around in front of the camera for quite some time now!
Keep up the wonderful work! I admire you all & I'm somewhat jealous!

Personally, l keep the webcam open in the sometimes vain hope that a crewmember will wander out in front of the camera. please, even if it means the bosun adding a bogus "bow check" to the watch, keep us trainspotters entertained with an occassional appearance!
