Nienke - Deckhand / Medic

Crew.
Deckhand/Medic (Esperanza) Netherlands

Big, dark, sad eyes in white fur, and people defending these little seals on the ice and snow from being knocked down. In my childhood I was fascinated by it, and as an adult I would defend them, I knew for sure!!

Growing up, you discover there's more going on in the world. I stayed a Greenpeace member, but other things were important too, finishing medical school, travelling, sailing and being with friends. At the background always stayed a feeling, to take part in defending our environment instead of only using it, this time in a more general way. After I quit my job in a hospital to go sailing once more, suddenly a friend called to ask if I wanted to go to the Southern Oceans, to join Greenpeace in protecting the whales.

So I joined Greenpeace. It feels special, to have all my favourite elements joined in one: Doing my job as a medic, on a ship, while "defending our oceans". Meanwhile, the satisfaction of belonging to a ship's crew, all of us committed to taking action and supporting each other.

Most of the time I'm doing deckwork, but the "hospital" also needs to be ready for all kind of smaller and bigger accidents and illnesses. Some medical training for the crew is good, and nice to do as well. Things like: How to logroll a person on a stretcher and bring him/her from the engine-room to the hospital? What to do in case of hypothermia 15 miles away from the ship while driving a boat? And all the while, the albatrosses are flying around us and icebergs in different shades of white and blue with red and orange hues thrown in surround our ship - and somehow it all feels normal. Hopefully this campaign will be successful, the Southern Oceans and the whales protected without the need of any more special campaigns and expeditions!

hey
you are brave and heroic
the world watches you, and experiences this atrocity through your eyes
thankyou for every whale you save
keep safe and warm!
