Marc - boat Mechanic

USA / Denmark
My name is Marc. I'm the lonely boat mechanic on the Esperanza.
At the moment I'm pretty busy. There's always something to repair or maintain
on the inflatables. On the Esperanza there are 6 rigid hull inflatable boats
- 3 outboards and 3 inboard diesel jet boats. The jet boats are a relatively
new addition. They're a bit more manoeuvrable, but take a bit of getting used
to.
But I guess if this is to be a profile about me I should focus more on myself.
I'm not a big fan of personality cults being spewed over cyberspace. I first
started working with Greenpeace back in 87 in Auckland, NZ. At the time
the old Rainbow Warrior was alongside the MV Greenpeace and was being prepared
for it's final resting place at Matauri Bay in the Bay of Islands. The
MV, as it was sometimes called, was preparing for the Southern Ocean and the
Antarctic base resupply.
That was almost 20 years ago. Back then we were known as the ice junkies because
there were those of us couldn't let go of this most amazing of all places. We
kept returning year after year while Greenpeace's Antarctic World Park Base was
here and we felt if anywhere had to be preserved The Ice was it.
Eventually we got a conservation protocol in the Antarctic treaty and the Base
was removed. I had the privilege of overwintering the year before in 1990.
The overwhelming beauty has no less diminished. I hope I can continue to return
from time to time. I also look forward to the day when the Southern Ocean becomes
truly a whale sanctuary. If there is science to be done it should be it should
be done with proper international oversight, and without killing whales. What
I have witnessed from the whale hunt is that it the same as industrial slaughter.
For now the best I can do is get all the boats ready.

Marc dear,
"Mitä kuuluu?" :)
So you are also there. I started to miss you all when I saw you here.. I should have known.
I remember how we watched Aki Kaurismäki's film "Mies vailla menneisyyttä" ("A Man without a past") in Esperanza and how you were the only foreigner who watched it until the end and were laughing with us Finns. :D
You know that GP man in that movie died couple of months ago..
I think you have beautiful places there to draw..?
Hope you all success in this campaign, and all the best with your journey.
Say greetings to Luke also. (I already writed to Mannes, when I saw his picture there upper and greeted the others..)
Best wishes, Maija (from finland)
