Luke - Assistant engineer

UK
Hi my name is Luke. I live in the hills just outside of Barcelona
in a small agro-ecological community that engages with the city by running
educational workshops and training courses dealing with diverse topics such
as sustainability, food production, renewable technologies and autonomy.
On board I sail as an assistant engineer, which is a bit like being a deckhand
in the engine room. I am privileged because about 4 years ago I started
sailing with Greenpeace as a deckhand, and therefore I have got to know both
sides of being at sea, that of the deck, bridge and navigation, and now that
of the systems and technologies employed to keep a ship afloat, moving in the
right direction and capable of sustaining all the things we take for granted
in our everyday lives, such as drinking water, hot water for showers, lights
power and heating etc.
This will be the longest continuous sea voyage I will have made, doubling that
of my previous record. I am curious to see how we shall all cope spending
such a long and pressurised time in each other's company. Fortunately all
the people on board are very special individuals, with a million and one previous
adventures and stories to tell, so for the very least I can't see it being boring! Also,
because there exists a shared goal amongst us, and because we are all motivated
and passionate about what we are going to do, there's a unique sense of companionship
amongst us, which has been there between the two ships right since day one in
Cape Town.
I feel very privileged to be here on this expedition. I really want to
be able to try and frustrate the whalers in their hunting, and in a small way
be a part of highlighting the mad destruction that we as a species are perpetrating
against our oceans and our planet (and therefore our species') finite resources.

Luke,
I was looking for that top. Bring it back safe for me.
