Banner painting and rolling about

It says, "Stop whaling".
Weather remains rough enough today that I caught myself thinking, "this almost feels like being on the Arctic Sunrise". Of course, if it feels like the Arctic Sunrise here on the Esperanza, then I don't want to think about what it actually feels like on the Arctic Sunrise right now.

Last night was also pretty bad. I found myself mopping up soy sauce in the galley at 2:30 in the morning after a big glass bottle of it took a dive. Reportedly, the Arctic Sunrise rolled as far over as 70 degrees. Soy sauce is probably the least of their worries.

Work went on today though, as it always does. The crew painted some fine banners despite the adverse conditions. Magnets were used to hold the material down. Steel floors (aka "decks") are handy that way. There was nothing holding the banner painters down, however, resulting in a certain amount of sliding around.

Update: I thought you might like to see this email from Kate (photographer on the Sunrise), to Jeremy (photographer here on the Esperanza) about last night. Nicely descriptive.

not sure it was 70 as who can possibly be looking at that wee dial when you're rolling like that. still it was big and fast too... as andy said, it was like a hole opened up in the ocean and we fell in it. so we broke a lot of stuff and nobody got a decent nights sleep (again). man this ship can be tough.

hope you're fairing slightly better over there.

hoping for a more poductive day tomorrow.

xx

To think in the UK we were worrrying about the first frosts! Have you seen any whales yet?

What will the banner say? Are they to hang on the "other" boats?

We think about you all and wish you calm weather|!

70 degrees!!!!???? Holy squid tentacles - that's an awful lot of roll.

I stood on a cliff today in Bermuda facing south and said a few things into the wind for you brave souls down there.

Wishing you all the best and hoping your home stops turning upside down soon.

Thanks for doing this for the whales.

Hi Andrew,
I really enjoy reading this blog - its the first thing I check every morning - to see what is happening with you guys.

Just to let you know that there are a lot of us out here pulling for you and hoping for great success on this difficult mission. Thanks for all you are doing!

It would be fun to learn a bit more about you and the other crew members. Any chance of some snap shots and a few words about your crew mates?

Best Wishes and Good Hunting!
Richard

How bout u make a sign that says stop putting lives in danger by harrassing fishing and commercial trade boats by stoping them from doing their job. They got kids too and they gotta put food on the table and do you think they care bout you lil fags chasing their tankers in little dingys? Your just putting their lives in jeopardy not to mention your own!

This one says "Stop whaling" (can't get much simpler than that). Other banners will say other things, but I think safe to say will stick to the same theme ;)

westy - Believe it or not, Greenpeace and many fisherman probably share the same views on a bunch of issues. Statistics show that 75 percent of fish stocks are overexploited, and plenty of anecdotal evidence from the fishing industry reinforces this. That's why we are campaigning for a global network of marine reserves, because the best science shows that this will lead to an increase in fish size and abundance. That's why we campaign against 'pirate fishing', because these illegal practices are undermining sustainable management. That's why we campaign against bottom trawling, because it destroys habitats essential for fish breeding.

And we are in the Southern Ocean campaiging against whaling because it is unsustainable, and endangered species are now being targetted. The is no good argument for hunting an endangered species.

As for safety, it is a priority in all our training, and our safety record is outstanding. We are very well trained, experienced and equipped - and no one is required to do anything they feel goes beyond their own personal level of safety. Peace and non-violence are core values for us - our activites are designed to ensure the whalers (in this case) will not be at any risk.

Hi Westy,
Even whalers and fishermen can support Greenpeace as Shane pointed out. I have a good example of that right now in Norway.

In these days the whalers and fishermens daily paper "Fiskeribladet", is asking why the Spanish authorities are not listening to Greenpeace's complaints regarding the notorious Spanish fishing company Grupo Oya Perez and its pirate fishing activities around the world.
