Unison windfarm approved by Hastings District Council
Radio NZ, 9 June 2006.
Hastings District Council has unanimously approved an application for a 37 turbine wind farm on Te Waka range between Napier and Taupo.
It follows a fortnight of hearings last month and three days of deliberations on the proposal from the Hawke's Bay power lines company Unison Networks.
Unison Networks argued the project, which will supply sufficient power for 50 thousand homes, was of significant economic importance.
But opponents said the wind farm would ruin one of the region's outstanding natural features.
Dinah Williams, who chaired the hearing, says the Council decided the benefits of electricity generation from renewable resources, outweighed any negative effects.
She says Unison Networks will have to meet 53 conditions which deal with earthworks, ecology, traffic management and monitoring noise from the turbines.
