Taharoa - Taumatototara wind farm approved

Wind farm to be built by Kawhia Harbour

Radio NZ - Posted at 6:19pm on 17 Jun 2006

A 22-turbine wind farm is to be built near Taharoa, a remote settlement by Kawhia Harbour, on the West Coast of the North Island.

Waikato Regional Council and Waitomo District Council have approved an application from the company, Ventus Energy, subject to extensive conditions.

There are several other applications for wind farms under consideration in the region.

The regional council's resource officer, Perry Empson, says the environmental impact of the turbines is likely to be minor.

He says the electricity will be fed into the national grid.
