Submit a simile
Bottom trawl nets are enormous. The biggest bottom trawl nets that hit the sea floor have mouths as wide as the length of a rugby field and are three stories high. Weighted across the bottom with heavy steel rollers that indiscriminately smash and crush corals, they swallow everything in their path. To apply the same methodology on land would be like dragging a massive net across entire fields, cities and forests in the hope of catching a few cows.
Help illustrate the indiscriminate destructive nature of bottom trawling by using the comments form to submit another simile for bottom trawling...
Here's a couple more examples:
- Bottom trawling is like clear-felling a forest in the hope of catching a few birds
- Bottom trawling is like picking apples with a bulldozer.

How is it helpful to have uneducated people attempt to come up with an insightful simile on something they know nothing about?
Please educate yourselves before commenting upon my way of life like this.
Well managed Bottom Trawling can be a safe and sustainable way of reducing unemployment and providing food and income to the people of our country.
How do you think that piece of Snapper, Terakihi or Gurnard got to your local supermarket/fish and chip shop? It was most likely caught by a bottom trawler.
I agree that certain types of bottom trawling should have stricter controls put in place, but generalising like this doesn't help anybody in the long run.

Samuel Beckett, a great compassionate genius who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1981, said that there appeared to be no degradation to which humans would not stoop, but he would not have been aware of bottom trawling at the time. There must be a view that if you have enough money you can go to another planet when this one becomes uninhabitable. Me, I'm going to stay and go down with the rats.

You try to bottom trawl,
But you don't seem to see,
In the seas there'll be,
No creatures, no life at all"

Bottom trawling is like plowing a field then not planting a crop!
When bottom trawling began on a small scale the fishermen would fish an area out then move on to another area. Today, we have run out of other areas and those fished out take many decades to recover. This is not good farming practice!
Because the fishermen don't own the land they plunder, they don't worry about the consequences.

The Bootom trawlnets remember us the "Wondyrchoun" machine, during the Edward III reign...."The Great and Long Iron of the Wondyrchoun Runs so heavily and hardly over the ground when fishing that it destroys the flowers of the land, below the water and also the spat of Oysters, Mussels and other fish upon which the great fish are nourished. By which instrument in many places the fishermen take such quantity of small fish that they know not what to do with them and they feed and fat their pigs with them, to the great damage of the common's of the realm and the destruction of the fisheries".... some things almost never change!

Bottom trawling is just like gold mining on a much larger scale!!! Except instead of sifting out useless dirt - you're eradicating beautiful coral reefs which are home to the fish you're trying to catch....Leaving you.......a bit fat nothing in the future to catch!! You do the math - find a better way or just stop altogether and find a meaningful way to exist!!!
