First hand stories of deep sea destruction
![]()
A giant piece of 500 year old gorgonian coral being hoisted out of a bottom trawl net.
We were in Whakatane yesterday for the second stop of our trip. We set up our information stall and once again we had plenty of people coming along to find out what the story was with the giant coral being chucked over the back of the boat.

And so it wasn't long before we had lots more outraged people signing postcards to the Prime Minister or taking them off to show friends and family.
We also had some fishers come and talk to us about the damage that they have seen themselves from trawlers they have worked on. This has been a pretty common occurrence during the campaign. We've been approached by many people that have worked on, and even skippered, bottom trawlers and have told us of the terrible damage they have seen. Almost without exception these people have encouraged us in our campaign for a moratorium on high seas bottom trawling because they know just how destructive this method of fishing is. They recognise that unless something is done, they won't be fishing for much at all in the future.
Such stories add weight to the question we ask the politicians... "how much more proof do you need?" As do the photos and videos that we know many people must have of weird and wonderful deep sea creatures, giant corals and other endangered species that have been hauled up in nets.
We're keen to hear from other fishers that are concerned about what is happening so if you have a story to share, we'd like to talk to you about it. We have a confidential email address where you can get in touch bottomtrawlinginfo@nz.greenpeace.org . Alternatively come and see us while we are in town - the dates and places we'll be during the tour are here.
In the meantime, we're off to Gisborne, so hopefully we'll be seeing you soon!
