A good place to start is to avoid buying fish species that are likely to be from unsustainable sources.
Greenpeace has Red List guides to help you with that.

Clcik here for the US guide.
It's often hard to find out where your fish is coming from but it's good to ask if you can. Greenpeace are working on the procurement policies of the major tuna retailers and will be exposing more of that work in the near future... so stay tuned!
Hey! Thanks for all the info about Greenpeace's efforts to stop destructive illegal fishing. It's so sad to see people taking advantage of a helpless organism for a profit.
I was browsing through a bunch of green websites and blogs and I came across yours and found it very interesting. There are a bunch of others I like too, like the daily green, ecorazzi and earthlab.com. I especially like EarthLab.com’s carbon calculator (http://www.earthlab.com/signupprofile/). I find it really easy to use (it doesn’t make me feel guilty after I take it).
Are there any others you would recommend? Can you drop me a link to your favorites (let me know if they are the same as mine). Keep up the good work and god bless!

It was so sad to see the poor fish struggling from the hooks. And the cute turtle.
But how can we regular people make sure that the fish we buy is not from longlining? or big commercial vessels?
What should we do?

In the meantime - you can sign the petition to ask the UN for global network of marine reserves! :-)
Thanks!

Also restaurants should provide the list of endangered species, help customers learn and become aware.
