US, Iran and ancient head banging rituals!

By Phil Lloyd on board the Rainbow Warrior

Vessel with coordinates … heading … at a speed of …knots, this is the coalition warship calling on channel 16. Over. This is the Iranian navy warship. Over. Please go to channel… Over. Ok going to channel… Over. Iranian Navy Warship this is the coalition warship. Over. Yes, this is the Iranian Navy warship. go ahead. Over. We noticed you have changed your course turning to port. What are your intentions? Over. Our intention is to continue and pass your ship on the port side at a distance of 100 yards. Over. Iranian warship this is the coalition warship we suggest you maintain a distance of 1000 yards. Over. OK we will continue our course and maintain a distance of 1000 yards. Over.

After hearing this on the ship's radio, it was clear to me that this is quite the game.

Try to picture a snowy mountain backdrop in Alaska or Greenland. The air is deadly still, deathly quite. Two large Male Muskoxen, great hairy walking remnants from a time when Saber Tooth Tigers and Wooly Mammoths roamed the earth, walk into a natural arena. Their heavy breath is easily visible in the icy air. Their curved horns glistening, their body hair raised, every muscle flexed. You can feel the tension. This is the prelude to an ancient ritual that could result in death.

Walking side on to each other displaying all of their pre-mating testosterone filled form. Like gunslingers before turning to face each other. Their front hooves are pawing at the ground. Unfortunately…If this display fails to make the other one turn away and leave, they take to running full speed towards each other, the clash of their heavy horned heads like a thunder crack, their back feet leaving the ground from the impact. They then turn to their places and do it all over again.

Speaking of banging heads, one of the U.S carrier fleets is missing one of its entourage. The U.S nuclear submarine The Newport Hope is alongside in Bahrain getting repairs, after hitting a Japanese tanker in the Gulf. I am thankful it wasn't an Iranian Navy Warship they hit! The submarine movies I have seen always say "up periscope" with the idea of looking before coming to the surface.

That, and the fact that they have the ability to hear a whale fart in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, can move in three dimensions, makes it seems strange they would run into a very large, very noisy oil tanker. This isn't the first time: several years ago while showing off to some Ú.S official a U.S sub doing a high-speed surface maneuver took out a Japanese training vessel.

While arriving under the guidance of the local pilot into Bahrain we passed the damaged Sub. The damage on the top front of the sub looked substantial. We were approached by a machinegun mounted Boston Whaler (That's a type of boat not a whaler from Boston.) They were yelling to stay back 300yards. My first thought was someone should have suggested that to the Sub Captain before it hit the Japanese tanker! The crew in the Boston Whaler were very serious about the 300 yards thing, so much so that they loaded the gun and pointed it at the our ship. Some of our crew were taking pictures and the said gentlemen advised us that we were not to take photos.

Now picture this, that if the Saber Toothed Tiger or the Woolly Mammoth had developed nuclear power, we would still be looking for what to do with the nuclear waste.
