Transit to Yemen
by Emma onboard the Rainbow Warrior
The ship is quiet again, as we begin our nine-day transit to Yemen. The
weather is perfect, the sea glassy and phosphorescent jellyfish flashed
on and off around the ship all through the night.
Of course it feels good to be busy campaigning for a better world, but
it is also very peaceful sometimes when everyone leaves except the crew,
and all we have to worry about is maintaining the ship and arriving at
the next port on time. Starting the transit on a week-end also
contributes to the relaxed atmosphere.
I'm looking forward to seeing Yemen. People who have been there have
told me it is full of culture and history, which is what you want to see
when you visit new countries. It is quite disappointing to travel half
way around the world to see cities full of the same billboards, hotels,
franchises and cars as at home. Where are we all going to be at the end
of this blind race for progress? If we stopped sprinting and started
walking maybe we'd have time to remember the past, think about the
future and look at what is around us. Then we could move safely towards
a better life for everybody.
