Greenpeace Press Statement in response to erroneous statements appearing in the Swedish press
Oslo/London/Amsterdam, 9.9.2004: On behalf of Greenpeace, we will emphasise that the Swedish Greenpeace spokesperson was misquoted out of context in the Expressen article today about Iceland.
Greenpeace has not, and will not, ask its supporters not to visit Iceland due to the whaling program. However, we did offer to the Icelandic people and Government to encourage our supporters to visit Iceland, if Iceland committed to stop all commercial whaling. We have never asked any of them not to go to Iceland.
Greenpeace opposes whaling and has been calling for an end to whaling for many years. When Iceland announced in August 2003 the resumption of its "scientific" whaling programme, after a 14-year hiatus, Greenpeace launched the "Pledge" campaign to show the potential economic and environmental gains to be had by choosing sustainable tourism over whaling. Over 61,000 people around the world have pledged to seriously consider Iceland as their holiday destination if it stops whaling.
