The write stuff

Didn't have much time to blog yesterday - miscellaneous rubbish to do - apologies.

I was impressed yesterday...and as any of my friends will tell you, that rarely happens.

I had made an arrangement to meet the editor of a new free (well 2 Saddams cover price) newspaper to talk about our work...

He sounded quite sombre and serious over email - and he has a middle aged, very English sounding name too.

So I was a little surprised to meet a fresh-faced, very young American student;so young his fashionable goatee was struggling to take root.

My heart sank I must admit - bugger I thought, he's too young to be doing this and he'll never get what we are on about.

Okay - eat dirt Sara, and remind yourself once again how deceptive appearances can be.

I know that from a lifetime of journalism. I know that from a lifetime of experience and I certainly know that after what seems like a lifetime in Baghdad. But sometimes you still forget.

He has come from university in Beruit after late nights chats with friends about how good it would be to set up a newspaper in the newly liberated Iraq. And he is one of those rarities that takes those late night chats and actually does something with them.

So he and some buddies have set up the Baghdad Bulletin. At the moment only three editions, at the moment only in English, but he has big plans for a full Arabic edition to run parallel soon and he is already heading towards financial stability - Lord Beaverbrook couldn't say the same when his newspaper empire first rolled off the presses.

He also uses the building to give shelter to like-minded folk who want to make a contribution.

"It's kindda cool" he says - "we're all under 25 and it's good to hang out with people your own age." Well that rules me out then!

They are doing good things... with balance and thought. Kindda cool indeed.
