Yesterday we arrived in the Argentinean part of Patagonia, to the small town of Calafate.
Today we visited the glacier of Perito Moreno, the only glacier in the area that is not melting. It is also the most famous and visited glacier in Argentina. This might be due to the fact that the Argentinean president is from Calafate, and he often brings his visitors to the icefield. Calafate has more than doubled its inhabitants during the last ten years.
Equipped with crampons we started the glacier walk, led by glacier guide José Pera. He believes that the fact that the glacier is not melting is because the accumulation area (the area where the glacier builds up, where it snows 300 days a year) is very big, in relation to the melting area.
I highly appreciate your action!
Go on, it will be cold....., but it must stay cold, cold enough that glaciers don't melt further
Greetings,
Albert Tas

Posted by: Nadia ORODA at January 30, 2004 03:47 PMhello, I'm a 22 years old and study forest and nature management ingeneer. I'm in my last year and also went to Patagonia for my thesis to study the impact of increesing industry and agriculture on the pristine forests in southern Chile. I've also visited some places (f.e. perito moreno glaciar, Torres del paine,...). It seems really important to me to protect those areas so that in the future our children could do and see the same beautifull spots. Go on with your project and I hope I can do something like that when i'm graduated (next year).
Posted by: maarten reynaert at February 21, 2004 08:06 AMHi, as I am from Argentina I have to tell that the fact that Perito Moreno glacier is the most famous and visited glacier visited from Argentina is not related at all with the fact that our president is from El Calafate. This glacier is unique not only in Argentina but also in the world because of the marvellous spectacule of the brake down that used to take place each 4 years. On the other hand one doesn“t need to travel by boat several hours or climb a mountain to admire it. The fact is that this glacier was visited by many tourists, from Argentina and from abroad, long time before our actual president took over the government. Many thanks.
