France v Brazil in a GE-free future

francebrazil.jpgSome friendly football supporters – who would also like a GE-free world made an appearance at the France-Brazil match in Paris yesterday evening. The four couples arrived at the Stade De France stadium with streamers that read ‘France - Brazil: better without GMO’ in French, Portuguese and English.

Our activists wanted to highlight the fact that over three-quarters of French and Brazilian consumers don’t want GE anywhere near their food or farming.

France imports approximately 75 percent of its soya from Brazil. The imports from Brazil are high as it is one of the only major soya producers in the world that can still guarantee GE free crops. Should farmers start growing GE soya in Brazil the consequences for Europe would be enormous.

"Although our action was fun, we wanted to put out the important message for French and Brazilian people to not yield to the massive pressure that international agro-business is applying and to continue to refuse GE,” said Arnaud Apoteker, our GE campaigner in France. "By staying GE-free Brazil maintains an advantage over its competitors such as the US. By staying GE free brazil also makes it possible for French food producers to respect the will of the French consumers not to introduce GE into their food"

Our football couples symbolize the mutual interest for these two friendly countries to support an agriculture and a food without GE, as it not only protects the environment but also the health of consumers.
