Crop outed as super weed

superweed1.jpg

The issue of super weeds, caused by GE technology such as Monsanto's Roundup products, has been highlighted in Brazil today when our activists delivered a more 'realistic version' of what Roundup Ready soya is to the to the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Mr. Germano Rigotto, demanding that the region remain GE free.

The governor was also presented with a letter that exposed the false promises made by the biotech industry that GE crops are better for the environment. It also requested that the government protect the environment and the interests of the region.

The information in the letter was based on a report made by Charles Benbrook regarding the first eight years of GE herbicide tolerant crops planting in the United States. According to the report the continued use of the Roundup herbicide in GE soya promotes the creation of super weeds, forcing the farmer to use increasing amount of herbicide. superweed2.jpg

"The supposed and advertised environmental advantages of the GE soya are not real," said Ventura Barbeiro our GE campaigner in Brazil. "After eight years of GE agriculture it is clear to everyone that all the warnings from scientists, consumers and environmental groups were right. Today the amount of herbicide used in the American fields is bigger than before the introduction of GE soya."
