May 17, 2004Italy Action Ends
"During our protest we successfully proved that non-GE soya is arriving in Ancona, that means that is possible to fulfil the consumers' demand for GE- free soya so why are the companies continuing to mix GE with GE-free and contaminate the soya?" demanded Federica Ferrario our GE campaigner in Italy. Following last week's actions we have demanded that the local authorities tighten up their controls of cargoes that are bringing in 'double layer cargoes', ships that are carrying contaminated soya underneath a top layer of GE free-soya. We also want Cereol/Bunge to apply adequate measures to deal with the two types of soya in order to avoid contamination. "This week's activities have been victorious both in Chioggia, Ravenna and in Ancona. However this does not mean we are going to stop - we will continue our protests until we will get a total ban on GE imports in Italy," added Federica Ferrario. As a result of our action in Chioggia and the prevention of the offloading of the Keoyang Majestys cargo of 40 000 tons of Argentine GE soya into Italy, we have learned that the Gruppo Operativo Ecologico, a body from the Italian Police Carabinieri, has confiscated 1 200 tons of the soya and the barge containing it because of inadequate documentation.
