May 10, 2004Argentinean Farmers create human anti-GE barrier
The banner was displayed in border between a native forest and a clear-cut field. The 350 participants were members of a farmers' movement, Movimiento Campesino de Santiago del Estero (Mocase, Mesa de Tierras and local Greenpeace activists. The banner said 'The forest is not for sale, we protect it' (El bosque no se vende, se defiende). The field is living proof of the clear cutting of some 800 hectares in the area; the forest is being destroyed to make way for more soya agriculture. "This is only one of many examples. There are hundreds of bulldozers at the moment that are destroying the last part of native forest that we have. The main cause for this destruction is the Soya agriculture," explained Emiliano Ezcurra, our campaigner in Argentina. "The national authorities can't deny that this is a reality. They must listen to the warnings of the experts and scientific community."
