April 29, 2004NIDERA 'fess up after Malaga action
NIDERA has agreed to meet with us and have open and clear discussions about their policy of trading in GMOs, next week in Rotterdam. NIDERA's managing director, Mr A.J.F Hock and our GE campaigner Lindsay Keenan will both be present. "Yesterday NIDERA received our message, and we hope that during the meeting we will discuss ways to abandon any progressive commercial activity of GMOs," said Juan Felipe Carrasco, our GE campaigner in Spain. Following our action the company admitted that the soya transported by the Winner is GE. Nevertheless it has refused to tell us which type of GE maize it is and hasn't allowed us to analyse the goods transportation documentation. According to NIDERA only the Spanish authorities have the authority to analyse the documents and verify that they fulfil the new EU labelling and traceability regulations. "The Spanish authorities must immediately inspect the documentation of this merchandise, carry out independent analyses and make the results public," said Felipe Carrasco. "We also demand that this type of inspection should take place on any shipment that could contain GMOs." We hope that the new Spanish government will put into place mechanisms of inspection and international control as outlined in the European legislation and the international Biosafety protocol.
