Spanish take action to stop GE Soya

spain.bmpThis morning our Greenpeace volunteers and activists in Spain occupied the soya processing facilities of Moyresa/Bunge in Cartagena, to highlight the importation of an estimated 4 millions tons of GE soya into Spain.

One group labelled the facility by painting `Contains GM soya` in massive white letters on the roof, copying the new EU labeling legislation. Another group is currently chained to the gates with another banner reading 'Don't Buy GE Food'.

This morning's actions were not long unnoticed, soon the Spanish media and police were there to hear our demand for Moyresa/Bunge to go GE free.

Spain is the second largest importer of soya in the EU, importing 6 million tons annually from the USA, Argentina and Brazil, of which over 4 million tons is estimated to be GE or GE contaminated.

Moyresa which controls 70% of the soya crushing in Spain, is a subsidiary of Bunge the largest soya processor and exporter in the world which is why it is so important for them to set a GE free example in Europe . The soya processing facility being occupied today is one of five controlled by Moyresa/Bunge in Spain.

Juan Felipe Carrasco our campaigner from Spain said: “We know that Moyresa/Bunge is importing shipments of GE soya, and also occasionally shipments of non-GE soya, into Spain. We know that this company has the expertise and the market power to convert its Spanish soya processing facilities to supply guaranteed non-GE, so why do they choose not to do so? Why does this company take the choice of a GE Free food supply away from the Spanish people? While Moyresa/Bunge continue to contaminate our food with GE we will continue labeling them as GE contaminated.”

Our volunteers and activists are still in negotiations with Moyresa/Bunge who have yet to meet our demands.
