April 19, 2004Esperanza open day weekend in Cartagena, Spain
The Esperanza is currently in Cartagena, Spain launching the Stop GMO tour, we began with a weekend of open boats and were visted by over 1500 people! I awoke this morning to a buzzing crowded ship. (Sunday is our only sleep in day). Each time I stepped outside, I saw a queue that continued to grow throughout the day. I was struck not only by the numbers (over 1500 people walked up the gangway this weekend), but by the diversity. People from all walks of life, all ages brought together by their curiosity and support for Greenpeace´s work. A highlight for one volunteer was helping 3 elderly nuns down the gangway, obviously moved by what they learnt aboard the ship wanted to know what they could do to stop this "tragedy for humanity". Greenpeace volunteers came from all over Spain, giving up their weekend to inform and motivate people to take action, their enthusiasm never failing. Cartagena is an important port situated in Murcia, south east Spain, where many GE imports are being unloaded. Not only is Spain, a large importer of GE soya and corn, but is the only country in Europe that allows the commercial cultivation of GE crops. Today I got a feeling many Spaniards are clearly unhappy with this situation. I am pretty sure the next time, the visitors I saw today, are in a queue, it will probably be in a supermarket with a shopping cart filled only with GE free food.
