April 14, 2004Brazil launches latest Consumer Guide
Ever since the launch of the first edition in 2002 it has been a huge success, so far 270,000 hard copies have been distributed and some 600,000 have been downloaded from the web. The food brands are rated either as 'red' or 'green' depending on whether the company can guarantee that all their produce is GE free or not. In this edition of the 108 listed, 60 companies are on the 'red list', as they have not guaranteed that their products derived from soya or maize are entirely GE free. It also has 48 companies listed in the 'green list'which indicates that they are totally GE free. "It was thanks to the pressure of the Brazilian consumers and our work that large international companies including Nestle, Kraft and Unilever have guaranteed that they do not use 'transgênicos' in their products ", said Gabriela Couto GE campaigner, Brazil. The Consumer Guide continues to be main tool for Brazilians who want avoid buying and eating transgenic food.
