Interview: Hansi Länsman, reindeer herder
May 20, 2005
Reindeer herder Hansi Länsman pours coffee into the cup and wonders: „Should we now get rid of these old growth forests during one generation, now that the next generation is starting herding they think that it has always been like this.“ Hansi has seen the whole short history of forestry in the area of Angeli, even though he is just turning 50. The road from Inari to Angeli was built 1975, and right after that the logging started.

A few days ago, students from the Educational Centre for the Sámi Area invited us to visit. Situated just outside Inari, towards Lemmenjoki, the state-owned centre is primarily for the education of people from the Sámi Area, to preserve and to develop Sámi culture and nature/based production, and to produce educational material in the Sámi language. We were guided by Irina, who comes from Loppi in Southern Finland. She told us that when she came to the school in Inari a couple of years ago, more than half of the students came from outside Lapland, but during the past couple of years the newly-introduced multimedia educational programs have brought many more students from Lapland. The past years the school has also intensified co-operation with other Northern people, which has brought exchange students to Inari especially from Russia, Sweden, Norway and Canada.

The reindeer that belong to Inka Saara Arttijeff graze in the area of the Nellim group of Ivalo reindeer herding cooperative. Inka Saara is at the moment living in Inari and is studying Northern Sámi language and culture in the The Educational Centre of Sámi Area. She has been going along to take care of the family reindeer since she was a baby, just like her sister.

Keijo started to work as a full time reindeer herder right after comprehensive school. Now 20, he is working for the fourth year and is this way continuing the tradition of his family. The family has been herding reindeer since the 17th century. Keijo estimates that makes 10-15 generations of reindeer herders before him. Further than that there is no written historical documentation.

An interview with Nellim-based reindeer herder Kalevi Paadar:
Reindeer herders of the remote village of Nellim still herd reindeer with traditional methods, using natural wilderness pastures of the area. In other parts of their co-operative, reindeer herding has partly shifted away from grazing on natural pastures due to extensive logging, and the reindeers are fed in the wild.
