Saami Council takes action
September 08, 2005
On August 30th, the Saami Council announced that it is asking StoraEnso to stop buying timber logged from reindeer grazing forests. The Saami Council is shocked by the decision of Metsähallitus to start logging again in the reindeer grazing areas, which are essential to the Saami reindeer herding cooperatives. If the logging continues, at the same rate it has been for the last few decades, the present generation will be the last one to herd reindeer in the traditional way of the Saami, says the Saami Council.

Pronouncement (press release) 11.4.2005
Saami Council, common organization of sámi in four states, is deeply concerned about the confrontation between free grazing reindeer herding and forestry in Inari municipality, which under the veil of employment issues in a harsh way aims to put the sámi reindeer herders, who defend their livelihood and traditional culture, in their place. Saami Council is also concerned about the indifference of the Finnish state to listening and understanding the need of sámi to defend their land. Reindeer herders want to protect the land, because the land gives them living.
