Stealing Signs and Twisting Arms
Sunday evening - we're packing up the equipment container. A member of the so-called "Anti-Terror Info Center" steals a package of 25 demarcation signs (the ones we're putting on trees, to demarcate forests important to reindeer herding). Petteri tries to talk him out of it, he is pushed away. Dave is videoing the event. Another one of the "Anti-Terror" guys swings a demarcation sign at his face. When he raises his hand to block the blow, his arm is grabbed and twisted behind him. He manages to get free, as Ric comes to his aid, relieving the guy of the demarcation sign, before getting also getting mauled.
See the videos...

Naturally I do not approve the "tactics" used by Anti-terror-info camp, although I am against GP presence in Lapland. It is very unfortunate situation when people have to use those tactics. Then again workers that are camping there can not do much to send GP out from there. But still..
"Welcome to Finland, April 2005 - an EU country that likes to pride itself on both its environmental and human rights credentials. And these are the tactics carried out by members of the so-called "Anti-Terror Info Center", set up by employees of, and with the permission of the state-owned forestry company, Metsällitus."
This above paragraph is just poor. You can not use that kind of incidents to further boost your conservation efforts. They are not linked to each other. Anti-terror-info center's people's actions do not speak for all of Lapland. Just like your actions do not either..
Above paragraph reminds me also of a comment on tv-news when Swedish foreign secretary Anna L. was stabbed to death. A young woman said smth. like "It is horrible. You never would think that something like this would happen in a modern society of today's Sweden...."

This is what remains of the famous Finnish Forestry Expertise. I hope Stora Enso, UPM-Kymmene and M-Real who use the pulp made out of these forests report all these activies in their 2006 Social Responsibility reports.
StoraEnso says that the only reason to buy wood from those forests was social sustainability. Keep it in mind if the logging starts in the demarcated forests.
I really do not get it why Metsähallitus and Pertti Veijola see those violent acts as something so good that they want to keep it going?
I'm ashamed as a Finnish citizen.

Rednose - whatever way you dress it up, this behaviour was carried IN Finland, by Metsällitus employees, and with the permission of
Metsällitus. The "Anti-Terror Info Center" people claim to be a local people's movement - but they just seem to have drafted in troublemakers to stir up trouble.
Personally, I'm glad that I've met so many fantastic people in the Inari area, so that my impression of Lapland isn't completely warped by the "Anti-Terror Info Center" members.
Speaking of workers - when the police came last night, they pointed out that some of the worst, and most recent troublemakers were not lumberjacks at all... I'm surprised at the real lumberjacks for allowing these guys to represent them.
