Meet Marc: Activist From Spain
Name: Marc
From: Barcelona, Spain
Job: Geographer
What are you doing so far north?
I came up here looking for meeting Papa Noel (Last Christmas did not bring me anything!). But soon I found out that his homeland is in danger, as the last remaining ancient forest left in Europe is being logged by the Finnish government's own logging company, Metsähallitus. Indeed, this is not only endangering species but also threatening the Sámi reindeer herder's way of life, an important part of the Sámi culture.
{In front of such situation I understand that papa Noel is under a nervous breakdown crisis and he forgot taking care of me. I forgive you, Pap}.
Thus, I decided to take care of his land and here I am now, trying to give a hand. Our message is that timber exploitation is compatible with preserving the natural and cultural values (our heritage!). It is also important to be aware that most of this timber is sold as paper in European countries. As massive paper consumers we can push paper companies to stop buying paper coming from unsustainable forest management.
Have you been out in the woods before? What happened?
Catalonia, my region, is mostly covered by woods but not to the same extent. There I usually go to the forests, where my favourite hobby is to get lost. Why not try it up here?
What animal do you most resemble?
A simple street scatty dog. I like to go around, smell new stories, lie down to sunbathe, and be have my belly scratched as much as possible.
What's your most important survival item?
My friends... and if am not with close friends, I try to make new ones.
Arctic Finland: Too cold, a bit cold, warm, or too damned warm?
Arctic is arctic, isn't it? "Y que le voy a hacer si yo naci en el Mediterraneo"
