Meet Carla: Activist from Italy
Name: Carla
From: Salerno, Italy
Job: Production Manager
I come from the south of Italy - Salerno near Naples, where it is almost spring time.
I work in marketing, as a product manager at a telecommunications company, but took a vacation to come here to help the Sámi people in voicing their rights and to help protect the reindeer forests.
It's not the first time I've been involved with Greenpeace, but definitely the first time I take action in a so cold place! Here the temperature can fall below minus 30°. Before now, I have been on board of Greenpeace ships four times - I've been involved in some way for more than 14 years, and I am proud to be an activist.
Life at the Forest Rescue Station is like on a ship - everyone has to take care of the area - even if there is no ocean around us, there is a lot of snow, and a fantastic horizon. I arrived here on Easter Sunday after a very long trip across Finland - more than 24 hours of voyage. The Forest Rescue Station is 30km from Inari village and 420 km from the North Cape.
I am happy to share this experience with an international crew - there's 14 us at the camp. I'm amazed to see the ancient forest, to live in it and to discover that a very thin tree should be hundreds of years old - yet when I compare it with an Italian tree - like an oak - it seems only a baby.
