Breaking the Ice
An interesting day. A minor road accident and some dialogue with the loggers camp! This afternoon we had a visitor to the camp - a representative of another Finnish non-governmental organisation, who was coming to visit, and was giving a lift to a couple of our guys. As the came past the logger's camp down the hill, their car's wheels spun on the slushy snow, causing it to slide towards the side of the road, where it tapped into the back of a parked snowscooter, breaking the taillight.
Not knowing what was happening, we dashed down the hill, where people were standing around, surveying the damage. The police were called - because of the delicate nature of the situation. Before this, we had gone more than a day without any real dialogue between the other camp and ourselves. But now, the broken light ensured that the ice was a little bit broken! Some of our Finnish activists were able to go and chat with some of the other people present. There was a bit of joking going on, and lots of chinstroking and damage-appraisal. When the police turned up, they took photographs, interviewed all concerned, and then went on their way.
We headed back to the Forest Rescue Station, where Rosso - our newly arrived Italian culinary genius - had prepared a massive spread of food. The weather is colder tonight - after the constant grey skies, snow, and dampness of the last few days, tonight - at 22:38, the sky is still blue-ish, and the snow is crisp underfoot. I've been sleeping in the kota the last few nights, and it's hasn't been cold at all - tonight will be a little different!
