The Boycott Against The Reindeer Herders

Click for larger cartoonMore strange goings on - now the forestry workers union wants to boycott the reindeer herders...

That's right - the Finnish Wood and Allied Workers' Union is calling for a boycott against individual reindeer herders who "collaborate" with us! This is the same forestry workers' organisation that is calling for a need to harmonise different livelihoods in Lapland, yet they are attacking the incomes of reindeer herders and their families. These herders have done nothing but rightfully demand their legal right to practice reindeer herding without having to fear destructive logging by the state.

We've heard from members of the Finnish media that Metsähallitus (state logging company) officials have been actively pushing this boycott.

On their website, the Union says: "The Wood and Allied Workers' Union carries out solidarity activities in cooperation with the Finnish Trade Union Solidarity Centre (SASK) and the Global Union Federations concerned..."

Wood workers have also rejected a proposal which called for the governor of Lapland, Ms. Hannele Pokka to chair negotiations about the whole issue. They have stated that Pokka is not trustworthy person. Why is this? Well, it's because Ms. Pokka said that the importance of old-growth forests must be recognised as winter grazing areas of reindeer.

Ms. Pokka was Minister of Justice in 1991-1994, and has been governor of Lapland since 1994.

Here's a little cartoon from Seppo Leinonen... letting off steam!

And you are the same Greenterror organisation that is calling for peace and harmonisation for everyone in Lapland, yet you are attacking the incomes of SÁMI forest workers and their families. One could say you are destroying the Sámi nation. These forest workers have done nothing but rightfully demand their legal right to practice logging without having to fear destructive attacks and propaganda of some internation Greenterror organisation.

Now what do you have to reply?
Do you really think you are the good and the opposite is the ultimate bad?

Greetings,
an indigenous Sámi person living not so far

I would like to remind the not so far living sami person, that logging is not protected by international conventions or our constitution as part of the sami culture. Freedom to express opionions is protected by our constitution, which is nice for you and me.
I think neither of you is ultimate evil or ultimate good. There is no need to see the picture so black and white. The main reason why this little campaign is causing so much reactions is, to my opionion, the fact that loggging of those forest is braking the law on reindeer herding. Locally and nationally the sami are a minority. It is not easy to maintain the culture when the reindeer herding has such dire straits due to deminishing forest pasture. It is very sad that Inari municipality leaders want to push out some local businesses and keep only forestry, up to a level which can not sustain.

"Locally and nationally the Sami are a minority."

I would say that quite a big minority locally. In the neighbouring municipality they are still a majority. Reindeer heirders are also a minority in the Sámi people. Loggers are too a minority in the Sámi people, and in the Finnish people locally and nationally.

"It is very sad that Inari municipality leaders..."

...and ordinary local people, also Sámi people...

"...want to push out some local businesses and keep only forestry"

They don't want to keep only forestry. It's certainly important to support local businesses, instead of multinational businesses.

You're a piece of reindeer ####! The Finnish Lapland has lost enough jobs already and you're making the living there even harder. Greenpeace seems to support the people that want to let the Lappland solely for the reindeer and the eastern Finland to the Wolves and make all the people to move out of those areas. That is what has happened in the Soviet union some 20-30 years ago. We in finland do not act like that. We want people to be free. Also we want people to have jobs so that they wouldn't need to live on unemployment benefits.

[Note: The above was edited for obscenity - Mr Laplander - there are schoolchildren reading this weblog, so I suggest you keep it clean! If you have a comment to make, there's no need for bad language - Dave]
