No Logging. Reindeer Forest Area. Reindeer Herding Act 2
We spent a lot of the last few daysout in the forests of Nellim, with the demarcation team, put up signs in Finnish and English, around the boundaries of the Reindeer herding area.
The signs read - 'No Logging. Reindeer Forest Area. Reindeer Herding Act 2' - referring to the Finnish laws that are supposed to protect reindeer herding areas.
Some of the guys were on cross-country skis - but they've also been getting around by snow scooter, along the shores of Lake Inari. It's quite incredible - the massive lake is frozen for much of the year that there's actual signposted roads across it! This makes demarcating the shoreline interesting and simpler than having to clamber through dense forest.
More about demarcation tomorrow... in the meantime, here's a photo of an beautiful icy river in the Nellim forests...
