Name: Satu

From: Residing in Turku, Finland

Job: Student

What are you doing so far north?
Protecting the playgrounds of my childhood (meaning we used to travel and trek a lot in Inari when I was younger). I also think that it is important to support Samis rights and their reindeer herding livelihood.

Have you been out in the forest before this trip? What happened?
Umm.. yes, ofcourse! Every Finn has been in forest. Once when I was small I got lost on a clearcut area next to the UKK national park in Sodankylä. As a child, you could only understand that it looked sad.

What animal do you most resemble?
I'd like to say tiger... but probably sloth

What's your most important survival item?
My CD-player. Shuts out the naggers around you . I don't even know what an ipod is!

Arctic Finland: Too cold, a bit cold, warm, or too damned warm?
Too cold. But OK in small amounts! And the Northern Lights are fabulous

Tee Hee, Thanks, Satu -- started my day with a chuckle. It's good to know that even natives of the place are freezing their asses off. I suppose we should express a bit more sympathy to Dave then.

Finland's climate is not arctic, you stupid activists.

Posted by: Eino-Kalevi at March 16, 2005 05:19 AM

Hi Eino - sorry for creating any confusion. Technically speaking, anywhere north of the Arctic Circle is regarded as The Arctic. This also includes parts of Russia, Norway, Greenland, Canada and Alaska.

The Arctic Circle is at a latitude of 66° 33' 38" - around the same latitude as Rovaniemi. Everything north of this can be regarded as The Arctic.

However, the climate in this area can be regarded as subarctic (or boreal), thanks to the short, but warm summers.
...Hope this helps!

Warm summers indeed! Last July Utsjoki and Inari were overwhelmingly the hottest places in Finland for the whole month. 30C temperatures were usual in daytime. In some days it was even hotter than anywhere in the northern Europe, Baltic and Germany.

Must be the global warming.

Let's see if you'll survive the rest of the winter and spring in your station. Or will you have to be there so long to achieve your goals.
