Meet Olli: Forest Campaigner

Olli: forest campaignerName: Oliver Salge

From: Germany

Job: Greenpeace forest campaigner

What are you doing so far north?
My aim is to help to protect the last remaining ancient forests of the world. I am here in Lapland to do exactly this. I'm working at the Forest Rescue Station to help to find a solution and to stop the logging. There are solutions to enable the forestry and the reindeer herding in Lappland. But to start a fair negotiation about this, a stop of the logging is required. I will help with demarcating the forests, help to monitor the logging and will do whatever is needed.

Have you been out in the woods before? What happened?
I like the northern forests and the people living here. The last time I was in a northern forest it was where pulp and paper mills as well as sawmills were logging a large area in the European part of Russia. I was there together with Greenpeace people from Russia to guide some timber customers in the woods. So far a temporarily stop of logging could be reached in parts of the so-called Dvinsky forest. A good starting point for sound negotiation for a long term solution, which protects the forests and keeps the timber mills running.

What's the most important survival item?
In Finland? Its obviously a mobile phone - works everywhere.

Arctic Finland: Too cold, a bit cold, warm, or too damned warm?
On lake Inari, windy, it is damned cold, but in the sauna, quiet hot.
