Meet Martijn: Activist from Holland
Name: Martijn Nije
From: Holland
Job: Student (almost) and working at a child nursery
I'm here to save some beautiful forest. The Netherlands imports a lot of Finnish wood pulp from this area. I'm here so I can spread the word in my country that we don't want this wood!
The Finnish dogs seem to like me - I always seem to get covered with lots of their hairs... which at lease keeps me warm. But I think its important always having 2 pairs of socks. If you stand still your toes freeze very fast!
My remarkable adventure here was rescuing a man who was 'a little bit worse for wear' at 11 o'clock at night. We managed to bring him to a place where he could spend the night. If nobody had found him, he might have frozen to death [Apparently, there was coverage in the local Inarilainen paper, thanking us for 'saving a life'! - Dave]
To be frank I had expected it should be too damned cold here, but till now on it's been bearable cold. This has probably something to do with the dry air.
I'm really impressed by the magnificent beauty of the nature here. The local people are very friendly, and I'm very motivated to do what I can to save this ancient forest.
- Martijn
