Name: Joe

From: Belgium

Job: Activist

My first name is Geoffroy but I like to be called Joe. I’m a French speaking Belgian and a graduate in chemistry.

I am a natural born ecologist: since I was young, I showed a huge interest for nature and its protection. As I am science-minded, I discovered and understood very early what pollution and other environmental issues are. I was still a child when I decided that the protection of the environment would be my way. I studied chemistry to have the knowledge to understand and fight pollution. For the same reason, I joined the local group of the Green Party in my town.

I was a supporter of several NGOs such as WWF, Oxfam and Amnesty, as I care for people and the environment. I did some volunteer work before I joined a Greenpeace volunteer group in 1998, as a greenspeaker. I became an activist in 1999 and I'm a member of the boat team.

This time Finland is very interesting for me, because I have a special link with forests. It's where I discovered nature (I was born in an industrial area). My grandmother lives near a forest and I spent thousands of hours into it when I was a child. Nowadays, I can't stand a long time without a trip in forest. As I like skiing, the northern climate doesn't frighten me.

- Joe
