A Clean Camp - The Dirty Truth

Reindeer Roundup Let's get down to basics. How do organise the Forest Rescue Station - and how do we take care of the campsite?
There's always work to be done... while some of the team are of demarcating the forests, others are looking after the campsite, making sure everything is 'shipshape'. For a start, there's has to be firewood available to fight off the cold. We've got stoves in each of the containers, which use wood purchased from the owner of a privately owned forest - not old growth! After we cut up the logs, even the sawdust gets recycled - it's used in our outdoor toilet, for composting, before transportation offsite. Unsavoury stuff, but that's reality. And as you'll see from the photograph - it really is outdoors. The idea is - everything we take into the forest, we take back out again. Even the placing of the camp is important - at this time of year, the ground is completely frozen, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We've placed our living containers so that there's little chance of doing any damage to the ground below, or the frozen creek nearby. We bring in our fresh water - and we bring out grey water - we don't just pour dishwater into the snow. We have special containers that we use for the grey water, and we have to make sure it's disposed of properly. Organic waste from the kitchen and all other recyclable are shipped out too, for responsible disposal. - Dave
