Name:
Frank Hewetson
Age: 39
Nationality: Australian
Position onboard: Logistics coordinator |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
It's part of my job. I feel very fortunate to be onboard and part of the expedition.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I want to be part of a successful campaign tour that saves as many dolphins and porpoises from being killed
by destructive and ignorant industrial fishing as possible.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Well, it doesn't involve a dolphin.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Mr Chippy, Earnest Shackleton's cat.
Describe yourself in three words:
Balding u-boat wannabe.
 |
|
Name:
Oliver Knowles
Age: 29
Nationality: British
Position onboard: Land-based
- running dolphin deliveries |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I'm not going to sea this time. My role is to organise our campaign work on land, making
sure that our message is heard by politicians, media and the public.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
It is a scandal that fishing practices known to kill thousands of dolphins and porpoises are allowed to continue.
I hope that our work convinces politicians to ban pair trawling for sea
bass and other fisheries that are identified as destructive.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Crowd surfing at a Levellers gig, pint of cider in one hand, pot of houmous in the other.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Jack Kerouac. I'm reading On The Road. Perfect antidote to cabin fever.

|
Name:
Greggs
Age: Downward slope to 50
Nationality: Scottish
Position onboard: Sauna, best bet |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I'm a security blanket to the media team - video editor, back up cameraman,
back up photographer and general techie geek.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I have the sad task of trying to get audio recordings of dolphins trapped in
fishing nets.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Opening a second bottle of wine.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it
be?
Jane Fonda from the opening sequence of Barbarella.
Describe yourself in three words:
Sad old git.
 |
|
Name:
Willie Mackenzie
Age: 34
Nationality: Scottish
Position onboard: Campaigner |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
It's my job/vocation to campaign, and sometimes you just need to be campaigning right up close to the
issue. We're lucky to have our ships and be able to do the things we do at sea.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Hopefully we can really highlight the problem of dolphin and porpoise bycatch out at sea - so
that politicians can no longer get away with doing little or nothing about it. On a more personal level, I'd like not to be sick.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
An infinite supply of Lego (you know, so you're never searching for that elusive last piece) and Green &
Black's cherry chocolate.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Chris Packham.
Describe yourself in three words:
Baby, I'm Burnin'.
 |
|
Name:
Frederic
Age: 33
Nationality: French
Position onboard: Campaigner |
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
To save dolphins from pair trawlers.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Being a dolphin porpoising.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
A dolphin.
Describe yourself in three words:
As nice as a dolphin.
 |
|
Name:
Kevin Wilson
Age: 43
Nationality: Scottish
Position onboard: Third engineer |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I believe strongly in what we try to achieve. I was also very lucky that in January 2004 Greenpeace phoned me
as they were short of an engineer. I've been here ever since.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Stop the needless slaughter of dolphins.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Never having to work again.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Albert Einstein.
Describe yourself in three words:
Tenacious, thoughtful, mad!
 |
|
Name:
Maaike Adriaansen
Age: 29
Nationality: Dutch
Position onboard: Second mate |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
When I studied biology after secondary school I signed up with the Dutch
action team. I started joining the ships as an activist, then as volunteer
deckhand and that's when my sea-going 'career' really started.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
To be very short on this: to get a ban on pair trawling. I don't know
how we are going to get the attention of the EU and to get them to put
a ban on it, but we have some pretty good ideas...
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
I don't want to be a party pooper, but I don't believe in perfect happiness.
Anyway, what would be really good is if people would start to see their
individual power to change things. That their choice to quit buying
bookshelves made of 'wrong wood' to make their homes look good, makes
a difference. We can bring multinationals down, stop huge things such
as climate change (if it's caused by humans) and be a bit more tolerant
towards each other.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
I wanted to say George Bush, so we can have long talks and maybe then
I can understand his really weird way of thinking. But he's one of those
people you can never change and I would end up very frustrated. So I'll
go for somebody like Midas Dekkers, a Dutch biologist with a very funny,
observing and unique way of looking at nature, including humans.
Describe yourself in three words:
No.
 |
|
Name:
Bent
Age: 45
Nationality: German
Position onboard: Chief engineer |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I met the green messiah and he convinced me that the social life on commercial ships doesn't exist.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Count as many dolphins as possible.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Love and peace and good happiness stuff.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
The Queen.
Describe yourself in three words:
I'm a bit over the top... sometimes.
 |
|
Name:
Sarah Duthie
Age: 30
Nationality: Kiwi
Position onboard: Campaigner |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I've been working for the oceans campaign for the last six years both in New Zealand and in the UK.
What I've seen this time is the way humans are destroying oceans and
the life in them in so many ways: from destructive fishing methods that
kill 'unwanted' species such as dolphins, turtles and seabirds; to wiping
out fish populations such as cod or orange roughy, and of course the
impacts of climate change. Unless all of us do all we can to protect our
oceans they will end up empty and dead. So I'm out here to do what I can
to change that.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I was out here in the English Channel for the whole trip last year - we know that hundreds of
dolphins were killed during this time and we found some of them floating
at sea. I want to keep showing people the reality of what is happening
out here and I hope that the UK and French governments will do the right
thing and close down this fishery to protect dolphins in this area.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
One day living in the house that I will build on Waiheke Island (in New Zealand) surrounded by native
trees and swimming in the sea every day.
Describe yourself in three words:
Fush, chups, choclut.
 |
|
Name:
Leon Martens
Age: 24
Nationality: Dutch
Position onboard: Third mate |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I did some work for Greenpeace on a sailing vessel when I was 19. I wanted to sail for Greenpeace on the large ships
when I was finished with maritime college. I worked some years for other
companies (oil tankers/sailing ships). Then I met a Greenpeace chief mate and he
rung the international office. Finally a "dream" came true.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I'm not against fishing in general. I'm just against the way it is done now by most vessels. Too
much fish is caught and the bycatch problems are enormous. I hope that
we can convince people and the goverments of the UK and France that
they really have to do something about it.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Freedom (= not too many material things, a lot of working experience, not committed to a job or company,
friends all over the world and just enough money).
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Herman Brusselmans.
Describe yourself in three words:
Quick learner (most of the time by making big mistakes), adapt myself
quickly to people/situations, annoying at times because of my big mouth,
strong opinions and relatively young age.
 |
|
Name:
Niall Bennett
Age: 29
Nationality: British
Position onboard: Press officer |
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
At the very least, I'd like more people in the UK to realise that dolphins are being killed on their
doorstep and, ultimately, I want to stop trawlers trashing the dolphin population.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Going for a leaf-scrunching walk on a crisp early autumn morning before browsing the market and picking
up some ingredients for a stew which bubbles away while I quaff lager and watch Arsenal spank Spurs.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Ben Bradshaw.
Describe yourself in three words:
Not a hippy.
 |
|
Name:
Jo Kuper
Age: 25
Nationality: British
Position onboard: Assistant cook |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I work in the UK office; an opportunity came up for the position of
volunteer assistant cook and I was lucky enough to get it. It is my
first time on a ship so I am very excited about the trip.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I really hope we can effectively get across the message that dolphin
bycatch as a result of pair trawling is a slaughter. Dolphins and porpoises
caught in the nets suffer horribly and are brutally mutilated. The extent
of bycatch is an unacceptable threat to the survival of these species.
I hope that if people can understand this then they will apply enough
pressure to get a total ban on pair trawling in these areas. From a
more personal point of view - just getting to experience life onboard
a Greenpeace ship is an amazing opportunity.
 |
|
Name:
Cedric Counord
Age: 28
Nationality: French
Position onboard: Action team/boat driver |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
By foot.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I want to stop a fishery that not only kills dolphins, but also (and
worse!) kills everything they catch without using it, disregarding the
sustainability of species and fishing stocks.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Peace, freedom, flowers and love... and a lot of loud Led Zeppelin.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Myamoto Musashi.
Describe yourself in three words:
Je suis Cedric.
 |
|
Name:
Simon Keith
Age: 25
Nationality: British
Position onboard: WDCS cetacean expert/researcher |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
To monitor the cetacean life in the Channel and investigate the interactions of dolphins with fisheries operating there.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Collect key information about cetaceans in the Channel at this time of year. At the moment, there is very little known about the abundance and distribution of cetaceans in the area during the winter months, and the data we hope to gather will support and strengthen what few studies have been done before and will help conservation efforts.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Good friends sharing good times.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Papillon.
Describe yourself in three words:
Optimist, relaxed, galoot.
 |
|
Name:
Francois Paillard (or Fanch to friends)
Age: 23
Nationality: French
Position onboard: Volunteer deckhand,
activist and garbologist |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I'm a volunteer in a local group (Toulouse for two years, then Rennes since September) and also an activist. The GP France office needed volunteers to bring a *French touch* to the campaign. Because of an unemployment period, I've got the opportunity to spend three months on the Esperanza!
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
To make public opinion aware of the killing of thousand of dolphins because of this fishery (pair trawling) in particular in my region (Brittany).
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
With my best friends talking over a drink, without thinking of the next day (greetings to my friends of Brielles and Le Pertre).
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Zack De La Roca (former leader of the band 'Rage Against The Machine').
Describe yourself in three words:
I'm not passive and I think our actions can make people aware of environmental problems. I'm curious and I like learning new things. You've asked for three words? Sorry!
 |
|
Name:
Marijke de Boer
Age: 34
Nationality: Dutch
Position onboard: Team leader
for the WDCS cetacean survey |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I became affiliated with WDCS, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society
in 1998 and have been working with them as their science officer and
as a consultant ever since. I have sailed aboard Greenpeace ships since
1996, starting as a deckhand - then from 1998 as a marine mammal scientist.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
During the 2004 bycatch campaign, WDCS led a whale and dolphin survey
in the English Channel onboard the Esperanza. The survey proved to be
highly valuable and the first provisional abundance estimate for common
dolphins in the English Channel during winter was calculated. This indicates
that the common dolphins in the Channel area could well become depleted
as a result of bycatch. More data is needed as it is of great importance
to the conservation of dolphins and porpoises that this major threat
is addressed in appropriate ways, with the ultimate aim of reducing
bycatch of cetaceans to zero.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Seeing whales and dolphins, although having a cup of coffee with a newspaper
in my favourite cafe is something I will long for during this expedition.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Mr Badger from Wind in the Willows.
Describe yourself in three words:
CRAZY FOR WHALES.
 |
|
Name:
Kate Davison
Age: 34
Nationality: British
Position onboard: Photographer |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
By not giving up on dreams. And luck.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
To highlight the plight of the fishing industry - that there is no tomorrow in fishing if we don't get it right today. That, and finishing knitting my socks.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Don't know, but there are few situations that cannot be improved with a gin and tonic.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
I quite like my cabin mate. She is Sabine the boat mechanic and knitting guru. We have got used to each other now so I wouldn't like to swap. Fame is overrated anyway.
Describe yourself in three words:
This is nearly impossible and so I have asked Gavin, the cameraman,
to describe me in three words. I think he said lovely, talented and
charming. Or maybe I misheard demanding, tiresome and annoying. All
of the above?
 |
|
Name:
Sabine
Age: 41
Nationality: German
Position onboard: Boat mechanic |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
'cause I love to be on a Greenpeace ship.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Teach Kate, how to knit a pair of socks ... and keep the boats running.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Doesn't exist.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Kate is OK.
Describe yourself in three words:
No.
 |
|
Name:
Mike Harms
Age: 34
Nationality: German
Position onboard: Electrician |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
A friend of mine worked on Greenpeace ships and I always wanted to work for GP too. When I heard they were looking for an electrician onboard the Esperanza I applied and joined the ship in Alaska. That was such a great experience that I am now here for my fourth trip...
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I really love dolphins; I believe that they are able to do unbelievable things. They are so smart and friendly it is just awesome. This is the second time that we are here to save the dolphins and I like what we do here in the Channel to save the animals! Hope we can make some changes.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
That could be world peace, or a sunrise at sea.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
George W Bush, so he can see how so-called criminals try to save the environment.
Describe yourself in three words:
That is a stupid question, isn't it?
 |
|
Name:
Huw Williams
Age: 38
Nationality: English
Position onboard: Activist |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I was asked to come as part of the logistics unit to assist in stopping the pair trawlers fishing.
I have been with Greenpeace volunteering for 10 years after joining
a local group in Buxton and became active within it by doing public
awareness and fundraising.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
To affect a change in fishing methods to stop the destructive pair trawling and stop the unnecessary slaughter of dolphins.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Being warm and dry at home in front of the fire with a large cup of coffee.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
I would prefer a cabin on my own.
Describe yourself in three words:
Drop dead gorgeous - so says Louise.
 |
|
Name:
Gavin Newman
Age: 40... ish
Nationality: English
Position onboard: Videographer,
diver and chief underwater toy builder/operator |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I first worked with Greenpeace about 14 years ago as an underwater photographer
working on the driftnet campaigns. Since then I have worked on numerous
different campaigns specialising in underwater and in-water filming
and photography. When I first started working for Greenpeace it was
just a job and I would just turn up and take the pictures with no special
interest or understanding of the issues. But over the years it has developed
into much more. These days I get far more involved in the campaign issues
and the best ways to highlight them visually. And I enjoy the challenge
of always trying to push forward the boundaries of what we do visually.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
For this campaign I designed a special underwater housing to attach
to the ship's hull to shoot underwater video and photographs of the
dolphins which often swim alongside the ship. We so often see shots
of dolphins leaping out the water but underwater is where they are in
their real element - so for me that's where we should be filming them.
Doing that at speed, underwater is the real challenge.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Diving out in the big blue with manta rays, sharks or dolphins and my camera in hand... or
circling high in the sky in my motorised paraglider on a clear blue day with mountains all
around and of course a camera in hand...
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
The ship is full of people and it's nice to have space to yourself sometimes
- so probably my ideal cabin mate would be a ship's cat... Tigger or
Puss in Boots (Shrek 2 style of course!).
Describe yourself in three words:
Our photographer Kate described me as 'underwater cookie monster' - which in truth is
probably quite a fair description. I would probably say: 'individual, focused and
determined'.
 |
|
Name:
Magali
Age: 31
Nationality: French
Position onboard: Deckhand |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
When I was five the 'Amoco Cadiz' tanker crashed on my beach. I saw the sea black with oil,
I have known about Greenpeace since then. Five years ago when the 'Erika' tanker crashed I
thought it was time to get involved with Greenpeace. I was in charge of a local group in
Marseilles and am an activist with Greenpeace France, and volunteered for this trip.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Have the feeling of having done something good, and come back more invigorated.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Making the world change for the better.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
God.
Describe yourself in three words:
Lost, but happy.
 |
|
Name:
Damian
Age: 34
Nationality: Yorkshire
Position onboard: Activist |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
Mixing with the wrong crowd!! I've been involved with Greenpeace for a few years and I suppose someone must think I can be
of use in this campaign.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Personally I want to gain more experience working with the boats and try to be as useful as
I can on the practical side of the operation - but above all to stop trawlers killing
dolphins.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
It changes.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Hard choice. I would have to draw up a short list and interview lots of candidates but Bob
Marley, Isinbard Kingdom Brunell or Penelope Cruz would be short listed.
Describe yourself in three words:
Mainly over enthusiastic.
 |
|
Name:
Natasha
Age: 29
Nationality: Maltese
Position onboard: Deckhand |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I started with Greenpeace because I wanted to do something about the problems, especially in
the oceans. Being the daughter of a fisherman it makes you quite angry when you see there
are no fish left in the sea.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Saving dolphins, and stopping pair trawlers. I would like to stop ALL kinds of trawling.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Being with my friends, family and my dogs... and having a good time.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Alan Rickman.
Describe yourself in three words:
Emotional, hard-headed and indecisive.
 |
|
Name:
Francois Provost
Age: 27
Nationality: French
Position onboard: Campaigner |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
Mainly because I wanted to!
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I would like to help raise the concern of cetacean bycatch and overfishing in France, where
these environnemental threats are currently underestimated or simply ignored. Oceans are the
cradle of an amazing and very little known biodiversity which doesn't belong to anybody -
but is rather a common wealth that firstly we must take care of, and then exploit in a
sustainable way.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Difficult one... life itself, and what is possible to make out of it - something like that.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
A non-famous one.
Describe yourself in three words:
Another human being.
 |
|
Name:
Loic Merel
Age: 36
Nationality: French
Position onboard: Cook |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I send a CV.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
My job.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Peace, love and...
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
I choose Jacques Chirac, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, George W Bush, Vladimir Putin, and Silvio Berlusconi - and to close the door of my cabin (without me) for a few weeks...
Describe yourself in three words:
Someone from earth.
 |
|
Name:
Eddy
Age: 60
Nationality: Scottish
Position onboard: 'Da Bosun' |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I couldn't get a job anywhere else.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
To stop these bloody fishing boats, or at least get recognition from the governments to do
something about the problem.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Being on a beach in Thailand.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Kahlil Gibran (who wrote 'The Prophet').
Describe yourself in three words:
Big teddy bear.
 |
|
Name:
Nena Osmers
Age: 29
Nationality: German
Position onboard: Deckhand/medic
(nurse) |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
In 2000 I started volunteering for Greenpeace Germany and took part in several actions
ashore. I also went through boat training and began to take part in water-linked actions as
a boatdriver or crew. At that time I was still working as a nurse in hospital. Then, in
2001, I quit my job there because I did not want to work in the same profession for the rest
of my life.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
So far I have already learned a lot about the bycatch issue from some of the crew.
Especially the people from WDCS who have given me a lot of well-researched information about
the actual situation of the dolphin population and the effect the continuing bycatch problem
has on them. And as I can see it, the pair trawling fishery is having a huge impact on the
dolphin population in this area. So I want them to stop it, simple as that.
If not the fishermen, at least the public in France and the UK will understand at the end of
this tour why it is so very important to stop this kind of fishery. And that might motivate
the goverments and the European Commission to push laws through that will protect dolphins
in the English Channel now!
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Nothing that could be described in written words. Maybe not even in spoken ones. But for
sure something I have a lot of experience with :-)
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Nelson Mandela maybe? There are so many people I would love to have a chat with, but he
would be definitely one of them. The woman that got the Nobel prize for peace last year
would also be a choice. I just can't remember her name. But her idea of environmentalism and
maintaining peace as something that is strongly linked to each other, I like a lot.

|
Name:
Frank Kamp
Age: 41
Nationality: Dutch
Position onboard: Captain |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I hope I can do something back for the sea - after what I've done wrong to it from years in in the Dutch merchant navy.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
That in the near future no dolphins will be washing up on the beaches.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
A big smile on my children's faces.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Captains don't share cabins!
Describe yourself in three words:
Optimistic but realistic [about weather].
 |
|
Name:
Thilo Maack

How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I'm an oceans campaigner.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Do campaign work.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Being with friends and family.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Tutankhamen (his mummy...).
Describe yourself in three words:
Hungry, thirsty, sleepy.
 |
|
Name:
Stefanie Werner
Age: 29
Nationality: German
Position onboard: WDCS-observer |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I was asked by WDCS if I want to be their third 'whale watcher' for doing distance sampling. And I
said I'd loved to come!
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I haven't done any whales, turtles or whatever projects in the last year,
because I wanted to write my Masters thesis about local whale
sanctuaries: what different governments pretend to achieve and what
they in the end really do put into reality. And so I did. I wrote 147
pages mainly about harbour porpoises and it seemed as if I spent half
of my life with reading papers, calling people and so on... So I
felt the urgent need to do something and not just talk about it. The chance to come here appeared right in time.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
My perfect happiness has quite a lot of names: the first and biggest
is Leah, my little six years old daughter - she is my friend and
sunshine. To have her on my side, finding the right place to be (which
will for me be somewhere close to the ocean) and not to lose contact
with all the ones I love, would be perfect. And always to be free
enough to change paths when it feels right, and to rest and 'grasp the
diamond laying in my way' because I am not desperately in a hurry.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Just the one I have, Marijke. The other choice: David Attenborough.
When I met him he was standing in the bow of a boat,
eyes half closed, white hair blowing in the wind, watching common
dophins and happily saying: "Oh my God, this is marvellous, I'll never
forget this" in a fine British accent. A guy, who was out there half
of his life! Would love to listen to him every day.
Describe yourself in three words:
Feeling older every day (oh, four words... so without 'older' then).
 |
|
Name:
David Sims
Age: 41
Nationality: English
Position onboard: Second cameraman, photographer, picture and video editor and weblogger |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
It all began in 1992 when I was asked to join a ship following weapons grade plutonium from
Cherborg to Japan. My role was video and photographer for the three month trip. After that I
was hooked and have since covered most Greenpeace campaigns in a freelance role. My true
highlights have been the Brent Spar oil platform in 1995 and French Nuclear Testing in the
Pacific.
My background is in news gathering but I also shoot lifestyle and kitesurfing around some of
the world's most beautiful beaches in between assignments. In recent years I was the first
cameraman to film the hand held harpoon hunting of Dall's popoise in Japan. This is my
second trip on the Esperanza but I have sailed with many of the crew before and some are old
friends - like the Captain and the Cook.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Save the dolphin and make sure the communication of images to the world's media works well
and quickly.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
As I am a fanatic football fan it would have to be watching the gooners winning 3-0 away at
Standford Bridge.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Keith Richards, Jim Morrison and Tony Adams - a quiet night in.
Describe yourself in three words:
'North Bank Highbury'.

|
Name:
Chris Suttie
Age: 30
Nationality: British
Position onboard: A bit of a
grey area though my official role is as volunteer activist. You
want a rope held or a banner made, give me a call... |
How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I was cycling through the centre of London and got a call. Would you be able to go on a ship
for a while the voice asked...
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
From my last period as assistant chef I learnt many things about this boat. She wobbles in
certain weather, which is pleasantly soperific. There is the history of terminology that has
lead to translations of stories; the poop deck, the story of brass monkey weather - that
kind of thing. They can take a back burner for my main goal: how do things this big float?
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
A bike, months of cycling ahead with a warm breeze aiding our way. I talk of we - my partner
with me - we are engaged in a monster tour of vinyards and mango groves in the tropics. Then
reaching sandy shores we hitch a ride on a boat somewhere else...
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
I think that would have to be the chap who came up with the idea of the super position of
the contents of a box one could not see: is it there, is it not? Schroedinger.
Describe yourself in three words:
Orange favouring northerner.

How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
It is my job, which I love. In 1989 I started working as the warehouse manager in a
Greenpeace 'shed' in Hackney, London. This was followed by work on the Greenpeace ships as
an assistant engineer and deck hand. Logistics and actions came from the beginning. Best
action I have done logistics on was in 1995 when we shut down Aldermaston Nuclear site with
10 tons of concrete. It was the most complicated action with ships, planes, 200 people and
concrete mixers!
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
Save Flipper and his family - doesn't everyone?
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Drinking a whiskey I have never tried before.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
Nancy 'Boots' Sinatra.
Describe yourself in three words:
Quiet, calm and sophisticated - well two out of three.

How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
I'm here to let the media know what's going on miles out at sea - by ringing them with
updates, issuing press releases as we find more dead dolphins or block pair trawlers from
operating. I also work with the photographer, videographer and radio operator to get photo
and video off the ship to where it needs to be asap.
Plus when there are journalists joining the boat I look after them while they're onboard. I
make sure they know how the boat runs - introducing them to key people so they can find out
the background about the issue or the ship and its history and make sure they've got all the
facts and figures they need to write their piece.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
A ban on all pair trawling for sea bass in the English Channel.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
A glass of very cold dry white wine drunk in a hot jacuzzi bath surrounded by candles.
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
If you had a time machine handy I'd say Gregory Peck, around the time he made To Kill A
Mockingbird.

Because I am a sailor.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
In this order: nobody injured, ship not sinking, stop fishing dolphins and everybody happy.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Very easy: sun, good food and wine, not working at all, good siesta and very good and close company...
If you could choose a famous cabin mate, who would it be?
I have very good ideas but my mother maybe reading this so better keep to myself.

How come you're on a Greenpeace ship?
That's a long story to be shared over a good pint of ale, in front of
a roaring log fire, in a cosy country pub. The short version is that
I simply followed my heart and the trade winds.
What do you want to achieve on this tour?
I have been on the ship just five days and, as I write this, I am sitting
looking at the mutilated body of the fourth dead dolphin we have found
in that short time. It is hard to find the words. These are the sad,
angry moments; the frustrating moments; moments of disillusionment -
when I ask myself, how many more times will I be here; how many more
years will this be allowed to continue?
The red information tag, attached to the dolphin's tail by the WDCS
scientists, flutters in the wind perfectly matching the vivid scarlet
blood as it flows back and forth with the gentle rolling of the ship.
What do I want to achieve with this trip? I want this to STOP.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
So many things, a few might be... a good sing-song, dolphins playing
on the bow, the smell of hyacinths, a passionate kiss, my own little
yacht, the stars at sea, my dad's home-made elderflower wine.
If you could choose a best cabin mate, who would
it be?
My brother Nick, who so wanted me to write something funny in this profile.
If he was here, I wouldn’t have to explain why that's just too hard.
Describe yourself in three words:
From my fellow volunteers – passionate, energetic, thinking, disciplined.
