Name: Hans

Position: Chief Engineer
Nationality: Dutch
Position: Chief Engineer
What is it that you do on a ship that you don't do on land?
Here I work and on land IÂ’m off!
What's the one thing you wish you had with you from home? Or what do you miss most right now?
A proper social life
Do you know what's the date today?
I think 29
How often do you look at the time?
Every 2 minutes, I donÂ’t know why, maybe because I have a watch.
One word or phrase you use a lot on the ship.
“Check- Recheck- Double check- Cross check- Final check!”
How long have you been sailing with Greenpeace? When, what and how was the first time?
Ooooh, It was a long time ago. You know we were all a group and different circles of people, it was in 82. My first sailing trip with Greepeace was on Sirius; it was an action against the dumping of nuclear waste in the Atlantic.
We used to work a bit in the office in Netherlands and then a bit on the ship. You know. At that time, it was not very international. Volunteers used to do everything. Everybody was a volunteer. I was a volunteer for almost 10 years. I had my own ship, which was a sister ship to Sirius, and when I had nothing to do on my ship, I would sail with Greenpeace for couple of months, always as an engineer. In 89, I sold my own ship, and started sailing only with Greenpeace.”
