Daniel - Captain

Crew: Elaine
Name: Daniel
Nationality: Argentine
Position: Captain

What is it that you do on a ship that you don't do on land?
Driving a ship, otherwise my life is exactly the same.

What's the one thing you wish you had with you from home? Or what do you miss most right now?
Friends.

Do you know what's the date today?
Wednesday 28 [Wrong! ItÂ’s Thursday 29]

How often do you look at the time?
I try not to carry my watch onboard. I keep it my cabin. I work 24 hours anyway, so I donÂ’t need the time.

One word or phrase you use a lot on the ship.
Nothing. I like changing my words.

How long have you been sailing with Greenpeace? When, what and how was the first time?
IÂ’ve been sailing for the past 10 years.

First time was in 95, on this Rainbow, in Chile. After the ship was arrested for trying to stop Moruroa, the French nuclear testing. I was then a second mate volunteer on the ship, for 4 months; we were working on the fishery campaign.

“Being a captain, you are concerned about the security and the health of the crew. If somebody is arrested or feeling bad, you feel it, (at least for me). Most captains are like that too. The ship is more than just a piece of steel. It is people, dreams, activists, an environment and a kind of special service, people working for others; it is a less selfish environment.”
