hi every one im kaz and i have been supporting Green Peace for the last six months i do what i can im a cyberactivist and an oceans defender i also use my dads photocoying and printing business to print posters and put them every where i can. i talk to all who will listen and thoes who wont about the great things you are doing. i would love to be out there with you doing everything i can to help save our oceans i live in a small town inland in New Zealand i want to study and get experience in enviromental issues especially marine life but where do i start? there is practically nothing here that has anything to do with the oceans and i cannot move to a town that would provide more opportunities for me in the area of marine research for the betterment of the environment. what can i do?

Hello Bunny, Nolan, Daniel, Eddie, and everyone else on board. Donnie wishes to apologise for bringing the bad fish. If he would of told me I would of saved him the embarrassment because I would of known he was lied to by the processor.
I saw some factory-trawler salted pollock from Iceland at the local fish plant yesterday. The rich are still getting richer off of our terrible marine policies but your visit was so welcome.
The southern tip of Nova Scotia would be a good place for you to stop. West Head, Cape Sable Island, has a deep water wharf large enough I'm sure. Dragging is continuing and I'm sure Donnie Davis' fishery will become a recreational one soon. At 13 I caught a 300lb halibut just off the island here tell Eddie. The halibut are smaller now but do seem to survive trawlers a little longer.
I videoed some scallop rakes again the other day. I'll put together a DVD of all dragging gear including a clam dragger later this fall. Both Donnie and I were really impressed by the members of Greenpeace and the crew of the ship.
I wish I had of brought more home-made DVDs or other things to donate to the cause. I admit that I was almost litterally dragged there but it broke my heart to leave for the long drive home that evening. Donnie was featured in a newspaper article that you generated. I tried to send it to the address Nolan gave me but it bounced back. I'd like to send it to you again as an attachment.
Donnie's wife is still worried that the fish-mafia here in Nova Scotia will get us for openly supporting you as local fishermen. Donnie was featured in two TV newscasts as well but what else can "they" do to us?
The people from Halifax didn't even know what a coral is not to mention what has happened to our great coral populations. Too bad about the rainout of the coral display but I'm glad to of spent the time on the ship. I've been an fisherman/activist, conservationist and now ameteur researcher for quite awhile. Sometimes it hard to justify the sacrifice until I meet others like yourselves. Trawling or dragging is surely a serious international war-crime and I pray your efforts lead to a world-wide ban of the insanity.
Donnie and I wish you well and hope to keep in touch. Derek

Hello from Midland,Michigan
On July 10,1985, as part of their Great Lakes campaign, Greenpeace was in Midland ,Michigan plugging Dow Chemical's discharge pipes.on the Tittabawassee River. I was there and will never forget that day. As I was coming up the riverbank Dudley Pearson from The Detroit News approached me and asked if I'd heard the news? I had not. He then told me that someone had blown up the Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand. I will never forget those words and the feelings of shock. To this day I wonder about the coincidence. This tragic event happened on the same day that Greenpeace plugged Dow's pipes.I wonder if other Greenpeacers who were here are thinking and remembering that day in the same way.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Thank you for everythingyou do. You have my deepest admiration.
Sadly, Dow's dioxin contamination of Midland and downstream residents is even worse than we ever could have imagined. We are still waiting for clean-up and public health protection. Dow is still defending dioxin. If you can ,visit the Tittabawassee River Watch website (trwnews.net).
Warm Regards,
Diane Hebert

Dear Rainbow Warriors,
albeit it is not the same as deep-sea trawling, I'd like to make you aware of the fact that something with similar devastating consequences is happening off New Zealand's north island West-Coast.
Plans for seabed mining are underway in that area and it seems this is not realised in the wider New Zealand public. Maybe you can somehow help to rectify this.
Have a look at http://www.blacksands.org.nz which is a web site set up by a west coast action group to oppose the mining activities.
I am not affiliated in any way with this group, but in my opinion the problem does not receive the attention it deserves.
Thanks for all the work you did.
Cheers
Frank

Hi all you earth warriors, fantastic to see you out there protesting the unsustainable deep sea fishing industry. I lecture at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Education (in the Top End of Australia) in the Natural & Cultural Resource Management area. Naturally our students are totally opposed to overharvesting of both marine & land resources. We recognise their traditiional land/sea management skills, and see our role as enabling them to access mainstream lingo and knowledge to best manage their lands. Greenpeace is certainly one organisation that they are all aware of, and have respect for. Way to go. Hi Erin, great to hear you are out there helping to 'fight for country'. Take care all. Lub D
Your Courage is to be admired, keep up the good work to raise awareness!

Hi,
Good luck to you all! Sorry but having a family and being involved in politics at a local level, I haven't had time to give your campaign more support.
I was interested in your video. I'm surprised that the Waipori is still going. It was one of the first of the larger NZ trawlers but is actually quit small by today's standards as it is only about 40m long. The other thing is that you only showed a beautiful piece of coral, only one small sample of the diverse and interesting creatures down there.
Somewhere I have some photos of some of the fish from research bottom trawling done on the Amatil Explorer in the Southern Ocean in 1990. I used to work as a science technician at MAF at Greta Point, the best place that I ever worked. I left because they were about to coporatise the Marine Research Centre by making it part of NIWA, in 1995.
By the way, I'm a lacto-vegan.

Hi to everyone at Orchard's School! This is Dave here, I'm the web editor on the Rainbow Warrior. At the moment we're west of of the north island of New Zealand, in the Tasman Sea. Most of the time we've been tracking bottom trawlers on the Challenger Plateau, and the Norfolk Ridge - both of which are in international waters, outside the Exclusive Economic Zone of New Zealand. We haven't seen any Japanese bottom trawlers out here - all the trawlers we've seen this time were from New Zealand. However, there are also Australian boats out here as well as Flag of Convenience vessels.
Hope this helps!

I was blown away by the photos of the coral and just wanted to write to say kia kaha, what you are doing out there is so important and I hope the ocean carries you well. You were on National Radio's news at 9 this morning - and they reported the size of the coral tree which caused those around me to gasp. We had a minister follow up saying that there was no point in attacking the good guys, and that we should instead look at regulating the 'pirates' who act out of all jurisdication and don' t abide by what rules there are. I personally don't see how those two things are mutually exclusive, and if the 'good guys' aren't so good, perhaps we should look a little harder at what everyone is doing.
Keep it up and thank you!

Dear crew, it is with deepest heartfelt thanks that I write to you to thank you again and again for being my/our voices and bodies in absolute opposition to the autrocities being committed against our beautiful planet. As I sit at home small children asleep in their beds I pray that your actions will be supported by the rest of us who care deeply and yet find ourselves only able to write these small words as our contribution. Never feel alone the rest of the world supports your actions and can only cry with the deepest of gratitude to you and the deepest of grief for our losses in the deep sea.

Tomorrow should see even more publicity for the Greenpeace campaign against bottom trawling with the Green Party of Aotearoa NZ launching their conservation policy and heavily emphasising the same issue.
Strength to you all - those bloody potatoes might sound funny but they're deadly missiles!
Without your campaign, commercial fishers would just crunch the bottom of the sea till it's destroyed. So, we're glad you're out there.

May God Almighty continue to give you the strength and capability to carry on the good work you are doing of making sure this planet is able to support and care for all future generations and that those who continue to plunder it be brought to their senses and be made to think of tomorrow's children rather than of lining their pockets today. Keep it up Greenpeace and may the good Lord bless and keep you all.

I can't beleive the attitude of the trawlers and am glad that there are people such as yourselves to fight for mother nature and to bring these sort of atrocities to the attention to the public!

COngratulations to you wonderful Greenpeace activists. You have braved the "slings and spuds of outrageous fortune" on our behalf. You have again justified our support of Greenpeace making a stand and highlighting the destructive effects of human economic acivity (aka GREED) on our precious environment. Big hugs from us both. Keep it up.

I'm glad somebody Greenpeace is out there doing something about the state of oceans. I'm a uni student studying ecology and conservation and hearing about various fishing methods such as bottom trawling has stopped me from eating commercially caught fish. Its good to see Greenpeace making everyone aware and trying to put a stop to bottom trawling once and for all. You have my support all the way.

Thank-you for taking this action on all our behalf. I think the wider public needs to be made aware of the damage these boats do. As with many activities such as this, they don't intend to do the damage, it is a by-product of their main activies, but I think they are also unware of how damaging this damage really is. unless you have studied the deep ocean or otherwise been made aware of coral forests and their slow growth how would you know. Ignorance is no excuse but activies like your help increase awareness. Well done!

It's David and Goliath and last time Goliath lost. So will these Companys that feel they have the right to rape the oceans. Money cannot replace ancient coral and fish. Once destroyed it's gone forever. When will these conglomerates learn that money is not everything. Sustainability of everything is how it should be. Keep up the good work and lets press the points home hard to the politicans.

Just a small note to say a big GOOD SHIT! I am in total support of what you are doing, and have sent a personal message to the fisheries about the cause that you are so boldly defending.
Being a Zoologist, I understand the threat to ancient sea life through bottom-trawling, and just wanted to say wicked work.
Honestly, if you ever need some more activists/campaigners... flick me a call and Id love to help you out!!
Keep it up coz NZ loves you for it!

Admire your efforts. Constantly battling human stupidity, ignorance, greed, and shortsightedness is not easy !! The human species overall is far too stupid to survive much longer of course but at least some of us can say we knew, we understood, and we tried.
Posted by: Bernie Svendsen at June 9, 2005 08:50 PM
there are trees that only grow in particular regions in southland, so i imagine it's a similar thing under the sea. there could be countless unique and wonderous species growing in a particular locale being decimated by one of these ships. this shouldn't happen no matter what the profit. protecting fish species is one thing, and protecting entire swarths of underwater landscapes is another!

Thank you so much for taking action about this urgent problem! I was very proud to be a Greenpeace member yesterday when the story was on the news. And it's very important to get people to pay attention to this issue; I feel very desperate about it, and very frustrated that these companies won't own up to the damage they are causing. One thing we all can do is never again eat orange roughy. I gave it up as soon as Greenpeace educated me on this issue several months ago. Thanks again.

HI, Thank You!
Thank you for putting your lifes at risk, but please keep yourselves safe and warm. You should be commended for your actions and your integrity should not be questioned. If more peope would take a stand against injustice and selfish behaviour and look after our environment then the world would benefit. I only hope that the future generations don't blame all of us too harshly and realise that some of us were very brave. I am always saddened and ashamed when peoples greed and ignorance gets in the way of them seeing the bigger picture. Without our beautiful oceans where will we be? The balance must be kept at all costs and every little bit you guys do is a step in the right direction. Perhaps if there are any teachers reading this, that maybe they will feel inspired to set little projects for our children to do to educate them, so that they will not make our mistakes! or at least learn from them. Hopefully, there will be enough left for them to enjoy. Life should be about quality, not quantity - but it is hard to fight against corporations. The only saving grace is that there are some companies out there trying to do the right thing, long may that continue. Life is a balance, thank you for trying to maintain it. Good luck. Lee.

I support your campaign -- on the reasonable assumption that there is persuasive evidence that bottom trawling is damaging. Your photos are helpful evidence. More will help.
In principle, also, it seems to be a destructive practice.
Do you have any idea what area around New Zealand's seamounts is being damaged by such trawling? is it significant?

On reading the message from Simon Niles, i felt a response was needed. This issue of the practice of deep sea trawling is being highlighted by greenpeace as it is an extremely destructive. The only people who can be accused of a vandalistic approach here are the large fishing corporates, ie, destroying the vast biodiversty of the oceans. The actions of Greenpeace were, and as always, peaceful, not as Simon has said "terror tactics". Perhaps the question to ponder is, do a select group of people have the right to plunder the oceans to their gain at the expense of generations to come? And to believe a multi national industries' word, that an organisation that has been passionately creating positive change in the environment for over 30 years, would purposely damage property, is ludicrious. As far as Greenpeace attaching an inflatable to the trawlers vessel..... . No one was in danger, and this type of action is merely to highlight and ultimately to stop this type of destruction. It is far more hazardous, for the fishing crew to be firing hard objects fueled by compressed air. Always pays to look at the bigger picture !!

Like myself and many others, the systematic destruction of our oceans fauna an flora by deep sea trawling remains a constant and troubling concern. Our thoughts and support are with you as we all seek to make an impact on this planetary castrophe.
We must never lose our passion for what must be done, we must always be unreasonable in our desire to transform our communties and governments inauthenticities about commercial fishing.

BTW,
Good to read the Rainbow Warrior is back in Auckland, they sure did give me a hard time at the local Airport when I arrived to dive the original wreck located off Keri Keri back in 96...
Nuclear testing may be over in the 'South' Pacific but apparently North Korea is gearing up for an 'imminent' test and it could quite possibly resemble the underground/underwater type location the French used in Polynesia, thus the suggestion to chart a new course for Hiroshima...

Hey there!
The 60th Anniversary of Hiroshima / Nagasaki is only a few months away, Expo 2005 is underway nearby, why don't U guys chart a new course for Japan and show the World U care!
Could the accumulated radioactive fallout from Atomic and Nuclear tests along or near the Pacific equatorial line have contributed to the El Nino effect?
Why don't U guys organize an Armanda of ships and sail this year from Hiroshima to Bikini Atoll to Christmas Island to Tahiti, encourage participation from NGO's such as the Cousteau Society to Government organizations such as the NOAA, try to get them to participate in a major operation, call it operation 'Heavy Water', in order to raise public awareness in conjunction with global media companies towards the potential results of Atomic and Nuclear testing and furthermore, the catastrophic consequences if such weapons are ever used?
If it's not a priority, make it so, current global circumstances require people like U to stand up and ring the alarm bell...
