Finally getting situated here in Korea.

Left Friday arrived Sunday morning in Ulsan.
Unfortunately our gear didn't.

Finally got it last night.

Been quickly getting up to speed reading all our materials and
following around Jim Wickens watchin him work our whale embassy, the
locals & the press.

As you may have gathered from the website this ain't exactly a junket.
We are surrounded by incinerators, petrochemicalplants, and of course
whale and dolphin restaurants. Sort of like camping out in the
wastelands of New Jersey.

The locals come down to walk around the ball field (field implies grass there is none) to get exercise but they are all wearing particulate masks. We could campaign on every one of our issues right from this spot. I'm even told there's a nuke not far away.

We will arrive in Busan soon tomorrow. 2 weeks on the Rainbow Warrior have passed faster than I thought. I feel getting weaker while on this ship for 2 weeks. Everyday I feel dizzy more and more and I am tired a little bit now. This morning, we found a new kind of dolphins. Neil told me to go out and watch them but I took it as a joke. (Yes, I know that I am so silly.) So Mr. Moon showed me how it looks like with his book. It was a bottlenose dolphin, which is much bigger and darker than a long-beaked common dolphin. It is hard to believe that today is already Friday and 1^st April as well. Time creeps on indeed. I have a lot of things to do after going back home. But home is the only place that I can go back.

어제 리비(Libby)가 잡은 기름에 오염된 갈매기를 보고 왔습니 다. 아무 생각 없이 기름이 묻으면 더러워서 갈매기를 씻겨줘야 하는 것인 줄 알고 있었지만 오늘은 직접 리비에서 물어보면서 더 자세한 것을 알게 되었습 니다. 갈매기가 기름에 오염되게 되면 스스로 기름을 없애기 위해서 입으로 깃털을 쪼아서 기름을 먹게 되고 기름이 갈매기의 깃털을 달라붙게 만들어서 갈매기의 보온을 담당하는 깃털의 역할을 방해한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그래서 어제 기름을 씻어주는 과정에서 털이 너무 심하게 뭉친 부분은 잘라내 기도 했습니다. 먹을 것을 주면서 조금 보살펴 주면 내일 밤에는 다시 날아갈 수 있을 것이라고 했습니다.

레인보우 워리어 호의 2등 항해사 이름은 텍사스 콘스탄틴입니다. 텍사스가 어디 출신인 것 같나요? 정답은 ‘캐나다’입니다. 그는 캐나다의 서부 해안가 인 브리티쉬 콜럼비아에서 삽니다. 텍사스는 9살 때 처음으로 텍사스에 가봤 다고 합니다. 텍사스라는 이름을 가진 소년이 텍사스를 찾아왔다는 사실을 알 고는 모두들 흥미로워 했다고 합니다. 텍사스는 자신의 이름이 다른 사람들을 즐겁게 해주는 데에 매우 유용하다고 생각하기도 하지만 가끔은 이름 때문에 문제가 생기기도 한답니다. 그의 이름은 어머니의 삼촌에게서 따 온 것입니 다. 미국의 주인 텍사스의 의미에 따르면 텍사스는 “다정한”이라는 뜻을 갖고 있다고 합니다. 또 북부 멕시코에 있는 텍사 코코라는 연못가에서 살았던 사 람들을 텍사스라고 부르기도 했다고 합니다. 멕시코식 스페인어로 읽으면 텍 사스는 “테하스”로 발음됩니다. 텍사스라는 이름이 그를 가끔 당황하게 하기 도 하지만 제 생각에는 그의 이름이 다른 사람들을 항상 즐겁게 만들어주는 것 같습니다. 그것만으로도 충분히 좋은 이름 아닌가요?

The second mate of the Rainbow Warrior’s name is Texas. Where do you think he is from? The answer is “Canada”. He lives in the western coast of Canada, British Columbia. He had been to Texas when he was 9. Everybody was interested in his name when they found that a boy whose name is Texas visited Texas. He thinks his name is useful to make people interested but sometimes he gets in trouble with it. His name is come after his mother’s uncle. According to the meaning of the state Texas, it means "friendly". It is also the name of a tribe of people who lived near from the lake, Texa Coco of northern Mexico. And it sounds “tehas” in Mexican Spanish. Even though his name makes him embarrassed often I think his name always makes people interested. Isn’t that good enough?

I did my best to wake up early this morning (I even went to bed at 9 pm last night!). Because I woke up too late for a couple of days before so I didn’t help cleaning the ship. What a shame. Thus, I woke up at 7 am and cleaned up after having breakfast. And I decided to go up to the main deck to participate in whale survey. I wanted to see whales with my eyes whenever I hear some crews and Libby say they saw them.

Sam and Jajeena are volunteers working as deckhands on Rainbow Warrior. They learned about the environmental movement interning at Greenpeace Sydney. Sam is from Melbourne, Australia and Jajeena(we call her just jeena) is from Fiji Islands. Sam and Jeena started interning together so they are close friends. Rainbow Warrior will head to NewZealand for the 20th anniversary of sinking Rainbow Warrior after sailing Busan and Ulsan, Korea waters. Sam and Jeena said that they are going to have a great time in NewZealand together.

It is rainy Sunday morning. Rainbow Warrior is floating on the southern sea of Korea and I can see many ships catching anchovies. The southern sea teems with anchovies. I realize that this condition makes whales dangerous after talking with Dave and Mi-sook. Sometimes minke whales are caught in the nets to catch anchovies as might be expected. How many fishermen will let the whales go away from the net?

오늘은 오전에 기자회견을 가졌습니다. 기자회견 내용은 지난 번에 가졌던 회 의에서 거론된 것과 비슷한 내용이었습니다. 기자회견 막바지에 그린피스에서 제작한 동영상을 상영했습니다. 인간이 무지막지하게 고래를 사냥하는 모습을 보면서 차마 고개를 스크린에 고정시키고 있을 수가 없었습니다. 피가 흥건한 상태로 마지막 안간힘을 다해 헤엄치는 고래를 보면서 할 말을 잃었습니다.

Scottie, you cannot say that you’re jealous of this. It is really hard to bear. I’d rather be in snowy Seoul like you. Here’s cold too and too shaky. All I can do is just lying on my bed. I have been lying for more than 5 hours! Gosh… I can’t believe that I am still alive. I believe that it will be getting better soon. See you guys!

점심을 먹고 난 후, 오후에는 Jim, Adele, Matilda, 그리고 Dave, 윤미숙 씨와 함께 고래잡이에 대한 언론 보도에 대해 이야기했습니다. 몇몇 어부들을 취재한 내용 중에는 돌고래들이 오징어를 대량으로 잡아먹기 때문에 자신들의 오징어 어획량에 큰 피해를 준다는 이야기가 보도되었습니다. 하지만 이에 대한 과학적인 근거가 아직 없을 뿐더러 오히려 그 동안 행해졌던 과도한 오징어 포획이 오징어 어획량 감소의 원인이라고 생각됩니다.

오후 7시 30분부터 시작된 회의에서는 호주 해양생물학자 리비(Libby)가 오늘 하루종일 윤미숙 씨와 함께 한 고래 탐사의 경과보고를 했습니다. 아침에 윤미숙 씨에게 들은 바와 같이 고래 탐사 중에 고래를 보는 것은 쉽지 않으며 앞으로 더 많은 주의를 기울여 고래를 관찰해야 할 것이라고 말했습니다. 내일은 고래를 찾을 수 있기를 바라며…

    배를 처음 타는 것은 아니었지만 이렇게 큰 배는 처음 타보는 터라 매우 신기하게 느껴졌습니다.
조금씩 인천 바닷물을 가르며 움직이기 시작한 레인보우 워리어 호는 다소 안개가 낀 인천 항구를 뒤로 한 채 내일부터 시작될 고래 탐사를 향해 항해를 시작했습니다.

이제 몇 일만 지나면 무지개 전사호가 한국 해안의 고래를 구하기 위해 인천 항구로 들어오겠군요. 저는 이번 활동에 웹에디터로 일하게 된 김예원입니다. 전세계적으로 위험에 처해있는 고래가 우리나라 해안에서도 희생되고 있다는 사실에 매우 가슴이 아픕니다. 이대로 포경업이 계속된다면 미래에는 고래들이 수족관이나 박물관의 박제로밖에 존재할 수 없게 될지도 모릅니다. 넓은 대양에서 자유롭게 헤엄치는 고래와 진정한 동반자가 되기위해서는 이제 우리 인간의 도움과 관심이 필요합니다.
