Come Back Whales

지나는 피지 섬에서는 그린피스와 같이 큰 환경운동 조직이 없기 때문에 시드니에서 그린피스 인턴쉽을 했다고 합니다. 지나의 대학 전공은 과학 분야라서 생물학에 관심이 많다고 합니다. 그래서 그린피스에서 트레이닝을 받으면서 유전자 조작 농산물(Genetically Engineered)에 대해 새로운 시각을 배우게 되었다고 합니다. 학생의 입장에서는 단순히 유전자 조작 기술이 인류의 풍족함을 위해 좋은 것이라고 생각했지만 그린피스에서 일하게 된 이후로 더 넓은 시각을 갖게 되었다고 합니다.

Jeena interned in Sydney because she wanted to train her local members in Fiji Island. Her major is related to science so she is interested in biology. She learned new ideas about GE from training in Greenpeace. She said that when she was a student she just thought that GE is a good technology for human beings and it will give us abundant foods. But after she worked for Greenpeace it was good to learn new viewpoints.

Deckhand의 일이 힘들고 어려워보여서 괜찮냐고 묻자 샘과 지나는 웃으면서 배에서 일하는 것이 매우 재미있다고 했습니다. 보통 때에는 밖에 자주 나갈 일이 없기 때문에 지금처럼 배를 타고 여기 저기를 여행하며 자신과 같은 생각을 가진 여러 사람들을 만나는 일이 정말 좋다고 합니다. 배에서 지낼 때에는 영화를 보기도 하고 밤에 바람이 적게 불고 별로 춥지 않으면 monkey island(선실)에서 밤하늘을 바라보곤 한답니다. 레인보우 워리어 호에서의 생활을 매우 낭만적으로 즐기고 있는 것 같네요.

I asked them if it is too hard to work as deckhands. But Sam and Jeena said, with a smile, that it is very interesting to work on the ship. Usually they don’t work outside at home so it is very exciting to sail around the world and meet someone who has same thought to them. On the ship, they see some movies or go up to the monkey island to see the night view with bright stars when it is not that cold and windy. I think their lives on Rainbow Warrior are lovely romantic.
