Come Back Whales

The radio room is where I work on the ship, and I talked with Neil who works in the radio room all day long. When he was young, he wanted to become a park ranger. But now he’s working as a radio operator for Greenpeace. Radio operator is an IT specialist and electronic equipment supervisor on the ship. He manages all the documents and mails on the ship, and sends them with the satellite to Amsterdam, Greenpeace office. Thanks to Neil’s work you can read my weblog.

닐은 1990년에 그린피스에서 봉사를 시작했다고 합니다. 1년 간 그린피스 활 동을 하다가 1991년부터 레인보우 워리어 호에서 라디오 오퍼레이터로 일하게 되었습니다. 닐은 오스트레일리아 출신으로 항해가 끝나는 휴식기에는 닐의 집이 있는 시드니나 멜버른으로 돌아갑니다. 시드니에서는 아파트에서 살지만 멜버른에서는 그레이트 오션 로드(Great Ocean Road: 멜버른에 위치한 암석 절경이 멋진 해변입니다. 에메랄드 빛 바닷물과 석양이 지면 매우 멋있는 암 석들이 파도를 맞으며 서있죠.)에 있는 닐이 직접 만든 집에서 생활합니다. 닐의 집은 태양열로 유지됩니다. 매우 친 환경적이죠. 닐의 집은 도심에서 먼 곳에 있어서 항상 많은 새들과 동물을 볼 수 있다고 합니다. 제가 좋아하는 월러비(캥거루와 비슷한 동물)도 볼 수 있고요. 닐이 친절하게 자신의 집 사 진을 보여줬는데요 집이 정말 예쁘더군요. 닐은 가끔 주방에서 마늘 빵 만드 는 것을 도와주기도 하고 내일은 피자 데이라서 피자도 만들 거라고 하네요. 닐은 역시 손재주가 많은 것 같죠?

Neil started to work as a volunteer for a year from 1990. And he has been working as a radio operator on the Rainbow Warrior since 1991. Neil is from Australia and he goes back to Victoria(Melbourne) and Sydney. He has a flat in Sydney and also a pretty house that he built by himself in Great Ocean Road, Melbourne. He uses solar panels for the electricity and hot water. It is very environmentally friendly. His house is quite far from the city so he can see many birds and animals around his house. And there are cute wallabies that I love as well. He showed me the photos of his house. His house is really beautiful. Sometimes he makes garlic bread at the kitchen and tomorrow he will make pizzas for the pizza day (every Sunday is the pizza day). Indeed Neil is a handy person. Isn’t he?
