| Climate talks end in disappointment
Greenpeace today -18th December- expressed disappointment at the outcome of the climate talks in Buenos Aires, and anger at the USA and Saudi Arabia for their deliberate tactics of obstruction and delay. The agreement means that discussions on future greenhouse gas cuts will not progress substantially during the coming year and will not ensure that countries most at risk from climate impacts get the assistance they need from the industrialised world.

| More than words
Yu Jie, the Greenpeace Climate Campaigner from Greenpeace China, delivered a moving speech and a plea for action to the entire conference in Buenos Aires today. Yu Jie talked emotionally about a six year old Chinese girl, Jiangshan, who was caught up in a flood that killed 3,000 people in 1998. By the end of the speech there were very few dry eyes in the auditorium and the applause was thunderous.

| Impressions after the typhoon
Today's Diary piece -Dec. 15th- is from Athena Ronquillo, a Greenpeace Campaigner from the Philippines. Athena is also a technical advisor to one of the official delegations here at the climate negotiations. Her frustration at the slow pace of the negotiations and the deliberate attempts of some rich countries to derail the talks and her concern for her country, recently devastated by extreme weather, make a very moving story.

| Amazon under threat: Climate Change and Deforestation in the Amazon basin
The rainforests and tropical woodland savannahs of the Amazon basin contain up to 30% of the terrestrial biological diversity. It is the largest contiguous tropical forest on the planet, almost continental in scale. The Amazon plays an important role in the global climate system, storing very large quantities of carbon and water. But the Amazon is currently caught between two destructive forces – deforestation and climate change.

| Cast Adrift in a Warming World
The industrialised world is already spending billions to protect itself from the impacts of climate change, while the poorest nations on earth, who will be hit first and hardest, struggle to adapt on the pitifully small resources pledged by the rich countries that caused the problem.

| Bush “singin’ in the rain” while developing countries bear the brunt of climate change
Wednesday morning Greenpeace opened a scaled down version of the Climate Ark outside the conference centre, with an all-singing, all-dancing presentation of the effects of climate change. Delegates were greeted by the sight of George Bush splashing in puddles, swinging round lamposts and “singing, just singing in the rain...”
