As you read these words there are four people in the heart of the Indonesian forest that are putting everything on the line to show the world where climate change starts from and who is responsible for the world’s biggest threat.
Four activists from the Philippines, Germany, Indonesia and Holland are still preventing a crane from operating in the pulp and paper mill of climate criminal APP despite countless efforts by company security to get them down. All while company boats on the river nearby have been agitating the water to stop photographers from recording the action.
Yet, enduring threats, fatigue, heat and the rancid chemical smell of the plant for more than nine hours - four of our activists are still holding their ground and making sure that the eyes of the world point this way.
And what the world has witnessed is no short of shocking. Vast spreads of once untouched forest now completely destroyed to make way for either palm oil or acacia plantation. Deep peat land forests burnt and releasing enough carbon dioxide – the greenhouse gas – to constitute a real threat to the earth’s climate.
One of the activists still on the crane, Joel from the Philippines had this to say: “I’m here on the crane and will stay here for as long as I can because I really want to help. This gigantic facility is destroying Indonesia’s forest and causing climate change. I think we should all do something about this, climate change affects us all. We’ve recently just had what’s probably the two most devastating typhoons in the Philippines. I know that I’m doing something that can help prevent that from happening again”.
The mill chews through more than 2 million tonnes of pulp every year, coming from plantations and natural forest including from around the threatened Kampar Peninsula. Despite endless calls for an immediate halt companies like APP keep on doing their dirty work, putting all life on the planet at serious risk.
As darkness falls on the APP mill, we are all conscious that there might be only four activists stopping the crane but there are millions of us down here that can make a difference each day to avoid runaway climate change.

Hold on guys the world is watching. The indonesian government needs to get a handle on these pulp mills this is not new we have gunns here in tasmania trying to do the same thing. GreenPeace needs to get behind us and our solution because there is 1000's of these mills around the world and you cant get to them all this way. We constantly hear governments get billions of dollars from these mills unless you have another solution nothing is going to change WELL we do check it out http://www.ecoenforcers.com look forward to hearing from you greenpeace. GREEDY NEANDERTHALISM IS WHAT THIS IS. IT'S ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. HAS NO-ONE EVOLVED YET? IS MONEY THE ONLY THING IN LIVE TO THESE BARBARIANS? I'M SO PROUD OF YOU GUYS ON THE ATTEMPT TO STOP THIS. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF CO2 EMITTED AND WASTED TO GET THE DEEP PEAT. IT'S VERY CONTRADICTORY. DON'T THEY HAVE ENOUGH BRAINS TO FIGURE OUT THAT HEMP IS CHEAPER, ESIER AND MORE RESOURCEFUL TO USE INSTEAD? OH, I FORGOT, THEY ARE SO GREEDY, THAT THEY DON'T EVEN WANT TO WAIT THE GROWING TIME FOR THAT, WHEN THERE'S SO MUCH VIRGIN FOREST, AND SO MUCH INNOCENT WILDLIFE TO DESTROY. THESE IDIOTS NEED STOPPED ONCE AND FOR ALL. Dear Greenpeace: Why do the members of the Climate Defenders Camp turn a blind-eye to the destruction of Kerumatan Protection Forest immediately behind Teluk Meranti Village? The village leaders are selling off land, constructing drainage canals and allowing slash & burn of natural peat land forest to occur for conversion to oil palm. Already, this un-sustainable land use has penetrated 2 km inside a Protected Natural Peatland Forest area!!!! Please help to stop this!! Additionally, why isn't GREENPEACE stopping the illegal harvest of hardwood trees from the Kutup River on other natural forest areas by the villages along the Kampar River!!! There are sawmills and over 250 logs currently hiding in the islands of Sungai Kampar that you have totally ignored!!! If you want to cooperate and take action on these climate crimes, please respond so we can coordinate our efforts. I hope you will post this email and not be biased or one sided in posting views that may not support your current high profile efforts to save the climate.
